Subject: "The Mediterranean Diet Grocery List"
Greetings dear OldWays Friends!
Just discovered your "Grocery List". I see a total of four "Healthy Oils/Fats" items that include canola oil - that makes me wonder how in the world that came to be considered as a true "Mediterranean" food. Please explain that.
In any case I'd like to know why the other Mediterranean fats apparently are not mentioned and especially including butter, lard, and goose fat?

Thanks for reaching out. Olive oil is the primary cooking fat in the Mediterranean diet, and is in fact one of the hallmark characteristics of Mediterranean diets. This is evidenced by epidemiological studies spanning several decades. On the other hand, animal fats were much
less common. This is partly because olive trees are such an integral part of the Mediterranean landscape, that olive oil was more abundant, and partly because animal products were much more expensive than they are today.
When we first introduced the Mediterranean Diet Pyramid in the early 1990’s, olive oil was an ethnic product, and not widely available in most stores. Canola oil, although not native to the Mediterranean, offers a similar fat profile, but is typically more accessible, which is why it was included on the list.

Thanks for your reply.
Are you aware that the majority of canola oil produced today is genetically modified?
In a 2011 review published in Environmental Sciences Europe, 19 studies of mammals fed GMO soybeans and corn were evaluated. The 90-day trials indicated liver and kidney problems as a result of GMO foods.[i]
In light of this I don't recommend including canola oil in the diet. On the other hand grass-fed butter and other traditional ruminant fats are both healthy and safe options that have been used in traditional "Mediterranean" diets.

Just recovered the above correspondence (from this Blog-writer's archive) and although it is somewhat dated it is being posted here now for a couple reasons. Firstly - it hadn't been mentioned before in tis blog (which is possibly this writer's primary blog devoted to this subject matter). Next - the "Mediterranean diet" as advocated by "Oldways" (and by other groups of a diet dictocratic ilk) appear to continue having some popularity; at least in regards to the notion that canola oil is an acceptable substitute for olive oil. This writer would like to include references here as to why that notion is true and not something to be desired by anyone.

"According to a news release from the American Gastroenterological Association, new research has found that starting a meal with a fatty soup significantly reduces the total calories people consumed in that meal.
The researchers, from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas, offered meals of unlimited quantity to their subjects on two different occasions. In one, the meal began with a fatty soup, and in the other with a protein soup of the same size and with the same number of calories. The fatty soup appetizer reduced food intake by about 20 percent in the study's subjects.
The researchers explain their results by saying that the absorption of fat in the small intestine at the beginning of the meal quickly creates a feeling of fullness, and so reduces one's hunger for the rest of the meal."

January 24, 2019 - Social/Political Resistance to Truth Within the "Nutrition Science" Field -
"The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation, in a 2008 analysis of all studies of the low-fat diet, found 'no probable or convincing evidence' that a high level of dietary fat causes heart disease or cancer. Another landmark review, published in 2010, in the American Society for Nutrition, and authored by, among others, Ronald Krauss, a highly respected researcher and physician at the University of California, stated 'there is no significant evidence for concluding that dietary saturated fat is associated with an increased risk of CHD or CVD [coronary heart disease and cardiovascular disease]'.
Many nutritionists refused to accept these conclusions. The journal that published Krauss’s review, wary of outrage among its readers, prefaced it with a rebuttal by a former right-hand man of Ancel Keys, which implied that since Krauss’s findings contradicted every national and international dietary recommendation, they must be flawed. The circular logic is symptomatic of a field with an unusually high propensity for ignoring evidence that does not fit its conventional wisdom."
Comment: I am so glad that I did not pursue a certain "nutrition science" course in college and that my professor (the ADA secretary in Illinois) responded to my unconventional inquiries saying I'd be better off on my own.

In 1956, an American Heart Association (AHA) fund-raiser aired on all three major networks. The MC interviewed, among others, Irving Page and Jeremiah Stamler of the AHA, and researcher Ancel Keys. Panelists presented the lipid hypothesis as the cause of the heart disease epidemic and launched the Prudent Diet, one in which corn oil, margarine, chicken and cold cereal replaced butter, lard, beef and eggs. But the television campaign was not an unqualified success because one of the panelists, Dr. Dudley White, disputed his colleagues at the AHA. Dr. White noted that heart disease in the form of myocardial infarction was nonexistent in 1900 when egg consumption was three times what it was in 1956 and when corn oil was unavailable. When pressed to support the Prudent Diet, Dr. White replied: “See here, I began my practice as a cardiologist in 1921 and I never saw an MI patent until 1928. Back in the MI free days before 1920, the fats were butter and lard and I think that we would all benefit from the kind of diet that we had at a time when no one had ever heard the word corn oil.”
Comment: I wonder whether any of the "three major networks" (ABC, NBC, CBS) may have a video recording of the "fund-raiser."

August 26, 2019 - "Magnesium Deficient Dementia" -
Dementia may be caused by magnesium depletion alone. Several studies show that severe neurological syndromes can result when conditions cause extremely low levels of brain magnesium that can occur with the chronic use of diuretics, which millions of people take to control high blood pressure. These neurological conditions can present as seizures, delirium, coma, or psychosis, which are quickly reversed by administering large doses of intravenous magnesium.
The body’s ability to absorb magnesium declines with age, so at particular risk are elderly people who do not eat an adequate diet and who use drugs that deplete the body’s magnesium. Studies show that senior citizens take on average six to eight medications regularly and there is no research to show what deficiencies and side effects are created by this blind polypharmacy. Add to that the effects of OTC antacids, which many elderly people take to cover up symptoms caused by a bad diet. Antacids suppress normal stomach acid and can lead to incompletely digested food, which causes gas, bloating, and constipation. As previously noted, another hidden danger is the use of aluminum in most antacids.
Aspartame and MSG (glutamate) are regularly used as sweeteners and flavor enhancers. As taste buds decline, the elderly gravitate to more sugar and spice to stimulate their appetite. However, aspartame and MSG are neurotoxins and we don’t know how much is too much especially in an elderly, vulnerable brain. Therefore, I recommend that they be entirely avoided since they can cause brain irritability that is magnified in magnesium deficiency.

This quote follows another blog post I made several days ago commenting on my introduction to a certain health coach who works with clients that are into "lean" meats. When I first read that I realized that people are still under the belief that was conditioned into the American psyche decades ago that fat is to be at least cautious about if not down right afraid of! The belief was publicly disavowed by leading magazines several months ago however I guess that message didn't sink in deep enough in the the collective psyche because "low fat" eating and products apparently are "alive and well".

'Truly, I will never go without it!
I suffered for ten years with depression, and tried all manner of medicine given to me by doctors. Separately, I realized I was low in magnesium and some other minerals. I took ReMag only, at first, thinking it would be helpful for muscle repair and other things. However, I started to feel less depressed. The only thing I had changed was the ReMag.
I have taken supplements on and off, but was already on an "on" period, but still fighting the same issues I had faced for some years. The ONLY change I made (not even diet fluctuated) was to add the ReMag. Thinking I might be experiencing a placebo effect, I stopped taking it. What a mistake! After just a few days, I was starting to feel the depression returning. Well, I started back up and, voila! I experienced the same effects. I added the ReMyte, and, it just so happened that I felt more energy. Again, the only changes were the ReMag and ReMyte, so I knew it had to be them addressing the mineral deficiency that had manifested as depression. This time, I was smart enough to continue taking them instead of experimenting on myself and my energy levels.
As an aside, I did try taking some other magnesium products along the way to see if they produced the same effect. Even though the magnesium content on the bottles matched, only ReMag had the effects I describe above, so it must be better absorbed. For how much magnesium I actually seem to be absorbing, the cost for ReMag is a steal!

Consider the wholeness and all-inclusiveness of your "body-mind-spirit" with regards to anything as it may impact your total wellness or the wellness of your family. If you are familiar with this blog series you know that I include the findings of both Dr. Weston A. Price ("Nutrition and Physical Degeneration", the cornerstone for "The Weston A. Price Foundation" of which I've been a member of since its first year of existence plus a former local chapter founder and co-leader) and Dr. Hamer - who discovered the five biological laws that are the foundation for the New Medicine.
If you have been introduced to German New Medicine (GNM) you may know that it does not appear to give as much credit to the idea of nutritional deficiencies as contributing factors to "disease" as does Weston A. Price. (I do wonder how GNM would explain the report of Dr. Price in his well documented "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration".)
For instance tuberculosis (and the other diseases of the day) were virtually non-existent among the isolated indigenous cultures while being considerably wide-spread all around these communities! In contrast - when the children of these isolated cultures left their tribes and consumed the modern day manufactured foods they soon acquired the same diseases much like the industrialized peoples. Then (just in case this contrast is not yet strong enough) when they returned to the diets of their native culture they recovered the superior health of their tribe! Isn't that interesting!?
I am convinced that nutrition plays a more important role in disease prevention then is generally properly recognized while simultaneously realizing that the psyche, brain and whole body is a singularity where emotional shocks in the psyche literally mark themselves on the brain and that, in turn, can launch a specific biological program that manifests through the corresponding organ of the body! However - I believe that it is possible to obtain a level of nutritional sufficiency that can be recognized as playing an essential role in "disease resistance" or "prevention" and that there appears to be evidence that supports the idea.
Nutrition for Psyche -
Dr. Price's nutrition-based findings not only indicates high resistance to "physical degeneration" it also indicated that traditional peoples had healthier psyches - as long as they were on their traditional diets. Recognition and acceptance of "nutrition for psyche" could allow for a new synthesis of GNM + traditional dietary wisdom. That synthesis would work very well under the banner of "Psyche and Health"!
Overall I'm convinced that Dr. Price's findings are severely under estimated; they are generally disregarded and will continue as such until the nutrition-to-psyche connection is more fully acknowledged to the extent that the psyche-to-brain connection is regarded in the new medicine!
Weston Price points to a connection between traditional nourishment and a much higher level of health (virtually unknown in the Western world) particularly regarding the psyche and it's resiliency to "shock conflict". This connection deserves to be acknowledged! (Updated July 12th + the following.)

There is both the essential nutritional requirement that must be met plus the need to eliminate (or maybe possibly reduce to what I could call a "Renaissance average" of) refined sugar if one wants an optimally nourished brain and all the wonderful benefits that comes with that!

That is quoted in a "slide" on butter as one of 16 types of "Cooking Fats and Oils". There have been a number of articles coming out with the truth of butter over recent months and finally admitting that the dietary belief (that virtually demonized butter and all the rest of traditional animal fats) that had been rigorously commercialized over the last half a century was a false belief! Truth is it was a down right fraud!
Just attempted to add the following comment (with very minor edit) at the "livestrong" site however they require a Facebook connection and I closed mine!:

(On the livestrong site I see "How to Replace Butter ..." directly above this window and wondering what is that doing here? Especially when the slide on butter gave some acknowledgement regarding the cholesterol myth!)
Coconut oil is a good to include (however I don't endorse that as an exclusive fat source for the sake of a vegan diet since I don't see a traditional track record for that).

From "Nutrition and Mental Development" by Sally Fallon Morell -
I’d like to start—as I always do—with an introduction to the research of Dr. Weston A. Price. Weston Price was a dentist who traveled throughout the world during the 1930s and 1940s, studying healthy traditional peoples. He found fourteen healthy groups scattered in different locations, all eating very different foods, but all exhibiting excellent dental health, which served as a sign of excellent overall health. They had no cavities, no dental deformities, their faces were broad and their teeth were naturally straight. Everybody in the community! Nobody needed braces! He also noted the cheerful, optimistic outlook of these people–how spiritual they were, how well they got along. He did not observe any mental illness among healthy traditional populations. He wrote about his discoveries and published his fascinating photographs in his book Nutrition and Physical Degeneration.
One particular place that he visited was the South Seas. The first Europeans to visit these South Sea Islands were Captain Cook and his sailors. When they arrived in Tahiti, they had scurvy and tooth decay and were just barely holding on to life. The South Sea Islands, with their beautiful, happy people, seemed like a paradise on earth, as they seemed to Dr. Price. The best bone structure that he found was in the South Seas–such beautiful, smiling, healthy people.
These people ate a mixed diet based on seafood and pork. The most important plant food in the diet was coconut. So it was a high-fat diet, as pork and coconut are high-fat foods. Like all the cultures he studied, the South Sea Islanders had at least one sacred food. Sacred foods were foods consumed by men and women before conception, by women when pregnant and breast feeding, and by all children when growing. Unlike our fatalistic society, which blames any problem in a newborn or in our children on two things–germs and genes–the South Sea Islanders knew that the health of their children was their own responsibility. They understood that growing children needed abundant nutrition–not minimum daily requirements, or minimum daily allowance—there was nothing about minimum in these cultures. They knew that nature could provide for abundance, abundant nutrition, especially during that time when the baby was being formed and growing.
One sacred food in the South Seas was shark liver. They didn’t need to hunt the sharks for food; they had plenty of food and hunting sharks was dangerous. But they hunted sharks to get their livers so that they could have healthy babies. The livers were removed from the sharks and put inside the stomachs of the sharks and hung up inside the trees and allowed to ferment. The oil that came out was fermented shark liver oil, very similar to the fermented cod liver oil that we recommend, and this was taken by the young adults who were about to get married and by women when they were pregnant, and also given to growing children. In addition, the men ate the male reproductive organs and the woman ate the female reproductive organs of the shark. So they had foods specific for men and woman to ensure fertility.
We received a sad letter a few years ago from a gal whose father had been a dentist and a big admirer of Weston Price. He had taken his children to the South Seas in the 1950s. At that time, she said, it was indeed a paradise on Earth. The people were so beautiful, so happy, always smiling and healthy in every way. In the 1970s, she took her family on a cruise to the same island. When they got to the port, the ship sat in the harbor for half a day, and they weren’t allowed off. When she queried the captain about why they were waiting, he replied, “Oh, we have to unload the Sara Lee Coffee Cake first.” The captain added that the whole shipment of coffee cake would be bought and eaten within two days. When they finally got off the ship, she was utterly shocked at what she saw. The people were unhealthy looking; they had tooth decay. But the most startling difference was the change in behavior. She had never heard a child cry when they visited in the 1950s; but on this trip the children were crying and fighting on the docks. So, there was not only a change in the way the way the people looked, but also a change in the way they acted–all because of the incursion of western foods. What she observed was most definitely paradise lost.
CHOLESTEROL AND THE BRAIN
Focusing now on the nutrients needed for our brain, as well as our second brain, the main nutrient we find when we analyze the brain is cholesterol—something that is very bad for us, right? The brain contains more cholesterol than any other organ in the body. But we are not supposed to eat cholesterol, right? Young women are supposed to eat a lowfat diet, even when they’re pregnant, even though animal fats are our main source of cholesterol. And according to government guidelines, a child is supposed to be put on a lowfat diet when he or she turns two.
A recent study showed that women who ate lowfat dairy foods tended to be infertile, while women who ate high-fat dairy foods had no problem getting pregnant. And so the scientists said, if you can’t get pregnant eating lowfat dairy foods, eat the high-fat dairy foods until you get pregnant and then go back to the lowfat dairy foods during pregnancy! Doesn’t it seem rational to conclude that the same kind of diet needed to get pregnant is also needed for normal fetal development?
Mother’s milk contains a lot of cholesterol along with a special enzyme to ensure sure that all that cholesterol is absorbed–because babies can’t make all the cholesterol they need to properly form the brain and the second brain. The second brain has lots of cholesterol in it, too. The cells lining the gut need a lot of cholesterol to work properly. So, the number one way we have gone wrong is the endorsement of lowfat, vegan and vegetarian diets for women of childbearing age. And our children are paying the price! ...

The subject of healthy fats and their vital importance for or total health and well being is one that I am continually aware of. I am deeply grateful that my own sense of sufficient fat nourishment in my diet has evolved to the point where it is a prominent awareness that I have whenever I have a meal. Consequently I have increased awareness of the foods that others consume that have low or no fat. I understand the dietary propaganda about fat that has conditioned people into believing things about fat that are simply not true and yet the media has begun to admit that they were mistaken about the good fats!
However people continue with their low to no fat diets as if the light exposing the lies had never shined! That "grieves" me! Especially when there appear to be health issues directly consequential to malnourishment and/or at least due to deficiency of healthy fat. I appreciate Dr. Weston A. Price's last words that he said right at the end of his life: "You teach, you teach, you teach!

This article validates my realization regarding the relationship between dietary fats and sugar in the diet. The more we can achieve a high-(good) fat content as the premium fuel for the body the better off our brains will be as well as the body organs. Definitely best to achieve this before any brain damage! I know a man who over-indulges on sugar who's brain memory is significantly impaired and I suspect his thinking brain may be as well.

Of all the different kinds of foods the "fat and cholesterol"-rich foods are probably the most critical for our total health and well-being. And if the "Powers-That-Be" wanted to cause some real "damage" then these foods would be the ones to at least confuse people about. With regards to the "U.S. advisory dietary panel" their recommendations may be "important" because of what they "affect" however, maybe the public schools are not the best place for growing children if we consider that their positively confirmed real need for the "fat and cholesterol"-rich foods are especially crucial for the child's developing brain!
"Vitamins A, D, E, and K are fat-soluble, meaning they can only be digested, absorbed, and transported in conjunction with fats."

My early childhood instincts attracted me to real butter as a must have food! I can remember during my crawling stage licking the butter of the wrappers! In my late 20s I tried a vegan diet for a couple months but I could not do it without some real (animal) fat! Maybe there are others who really do well (although I don't know anyone who does) however I could never recommend going without real fat!

This caught my attention right at the start with "back and neck pain" as this is something that I have about fifty-five years of experience dealing with! The idea that either the cause or a contributing factor for the continued pain (years after original physical impact) could be rooted in the "brain" interests me enough that I'd like to see what the book says on this.

I started this blog over four years ago on December 31, 2013. At that time I mentioned the "findings of ... Dr. Weston A. Price" which are the results of his monumental studies of isolated primitive peoples as presented in his magnificent book: "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration". Sally Fallon Morell has observed that Dr. Price "did not observe any mental illness among healthy traditional populations." Will western medicine ever acknowledge this? It is now approaching eighty years since the original publication of this work and it appears to have been completely ignored by the whole entire medical matrix. Do you think the pharmaceutical industry had and still has something to do with turning a blind eye regarding what Dr. Price discovered?
Continuing with "Nutrition for Psyche" the very next item I presented was concerning the anti-nutriton consequences of sugar with its devastating impact on the gut and the gut connection with the brain. Fortunately this kind of information is coming out in works such as Broken Brain.
Just before Dr. Hyman's opening statement another doctor: Drew Ramsey spoke of a "wave of mental health disorders" and that these disorders are "rooted in brain health". Earlier in the first and second episodes we learned that brain health is rooted in gut health. Therefore mental health is ultimately rooted in gut health. Yet this understanding was known many decades earlier with Dr. Price and earlier still!
It is at this point that I have to acknowledge the fact that there are other interests at play in the world of "medicine" than just the high ideals of good doctors. It could be said that these other interests are most largely of a corporate nature that has been enormously successful in achieving its primary objectives of benefiting their investor/share holders and persuading many doctors to "immediately reach for their prescription pad".

Sally you deserve a standing ovation! And this article deserves to be required reading in all schools of medicine, every culinary course and all health, nutrition, classes throughout the u.s.of A!
That’s my honest assessment and includes an up-to-date observation based on one of the so-called leading institutions and their ‘experts” on what they call “healthy oils”. “The Expert: Dr. Walter Willett”[ii] says: “It is essential to include a special kind of unsaturated fat, called omega-3 fats, in the diet; good sources include … canola oil”.[i] This doctor endorses: “The Healthy Eating Plate, created by nutrition experts at Harvard School of Public Health and editors at Harvard Health Publications,”[iii] claimed to be based on the latest science. The only problem is they do not give full disclosure on all the funding that supports whatever “science” they may be referring to as well as full disclosure on whatever agenda/s they wish to achieve with their science projects.
A large part of what makes this article so great as presenting the money interest/s behind canola oil and with consistent clarification in a way that makes perfect sense to our rational intelligence as to why certain products have been essentially invented and marketed as if they were some kind of modern-day manna from heaven!
Also appreciated is the greater context and over-all guiding wisdom based on whole health that requires a diet with saturated fats as this further exposes the erroneous “thinking” of the above mentioned “expert” who also says: “Saturated fats … negatively impact health and are best consumed in moderation”[iv]
A current showing of a well-made documentary called: Broken Brain also presents “the greater context” with many references to gut-brain links and how problems “in the head” have dramatically increased since the “low-fat” propaganda machine was released several decades ago. Many of us reading here know that health of body and mind/brain is wholly dependent on the health of the micro biome which of course comes back to diet. And many of us also know that special interests debased what once was our reasonably healthy four-square picture of nutrition (good fuel for our “engines”) that effectively drained the high-grade oil out of the majority of Americans’ “engines” and now we see “engines” freezing as a result! It upsets me when this disaster includes the “little engines” of children! (If this fraud were about machines there would be lawsuits flying all over the place!)

Although I've made only one brief mention of diabetes in the above posts I find the following relevant to the subject matter of this blog for a number of reasons. Firstly there are essentially two kinds of fuel the your body can possibly work with (although one is better than the other). There is a carb-sugar based fuel and there is a fat-based fuel. The following can be considered as an impetus toward adopting the later fuel system.
"Diabetes is the most searched-for health condition on the web today. Millions of people are trying to find out what it is and how to overcome it.
However, modern medicine doesn't have time to educate people about lifestyle and modern doctors know nothing about the minerals that help prevent diabetes. Instead, they prescribe drugs to force the pancreas to produce more insulin, to try and make cells allow glucose to enter. Having been bombarded with too much insulin already, these cells are insulin resistant and won't accept any more glucose. Thus, the cells starve and no energy is produced and the blood stream is saturated with sugar.
Producing excess insulin to deal with carbs puts you on the road toward diabetes and tissue damage. Sugar levels keep rising and your doctor just doubles the dose of the medication, adds more meds and finally insulin injections. Your blood sugar may look OK on paper but your diabetes is getting worse along with drug side effects.
However, there is another way that is natural, free, and requires no drugs or surgery.
