Many people struggle with their weight. Whether it's from poor diet, lack of exercise or a serious medical condition, carrying a few extra pounds can be frustrating. Luckily, there are many different things you can do to help yourself lose weight and feel better. In this article, we'll go over five ways you can safely get your weight under control while supporting your body and its needs.

1. Eat Regularly

Weight loss plans have a bad reputation. You might think that to lose weight you have to eat less often during the day. For example, skipping breakfast and an afternoon snack to cut calories. However, this rarely helps you lose weight. It puts the body in a state of stress because it thinks it doesn't have enough food or energy, so it starts storing extra reserves every time you do eat instead of burning off what's there.

Instead, eat regular meals that you portion to your needs. The more regularly you eat, the more you can support your metabolism and encourage your body to start burning fat. This includes breakfast! Breakfast kickstarts your metabolism and sets your blood sugar levels the entire day, so don't skip your first meal.

2. Meal Prep

The biggest enemy when trying to lose weight is hunger. When you get hungry and your blood sugar drops, you'll start craving all the sugary, carb-dense foods you're probably trying to avoid. Meal prepping can help you avoid this problem.

Try cooking all of your food for the week at once and saving it in individual containers. This way you can easily portion control your meals, plus you don't have to think about what you're going to eat during the week. All you have to do is grab a container and enjoy a meal.

3. Eliminate Sugar

This is probably the most difficult thing to do on any diet, but it gives the most dramatic results. Sugar not only turns into fat in your body, but it also affects your hormones and most basic bodily functions, causing issues such as poor skin, hormonal imbalance and tiredness.

4. Eat Whole Foods

Changing your diet can have a huge impact when you're trying to lose weight. It can be difficult, though, because it often means changing the way you think of food and how much time you spend in the kitchen. So when trying to lose weight, it's key to stay away from these in the grocery aisles.

Instead, you can "shop the L." This means sticking with the outskirts of your grocery store, such as the produce and meat departments, to avoid all of the processed foods in the aisles. Focus on eating mostly vegetables, with meat as a side and fruit on occasion. The more balanced and wholesome your diet is, the easier it will be to lose weight.

5. Be Active

Exercise is an important aspect of losing weight. It helps you burn excess fat and carbs at the end of the day and supports your heart, circulatory system and muscles. A common misconception is that to lose weight you have to do a hard workout. That's not the case! In fact, some of the best workouts for weight loss are actually walking.

Find a workout you enjoy and start working it into your everyday routine. No matter what level of intensity, any type of activity will do your body good.
