6 Dangers of Sitting Too Much and How To Get Moving Again

Here's a list of six things that can happen when you sit too much, and how to get yourself moving again.

Whether you commute or work at home, it's not unheard of to spend hours on end seated in front of a computer. After work, you probably plunk down again to watch TV or use social media. Before you know it, hours have passed, and it's time for bed. Did you know that all this sitting around takes a toll on your physical and mental well-being? Here's a list of six things that can happen when you sit too much, and how to get yourself moving again.

1. Inevitable Weight Gain

When you sit for hours each day, weight gain is inevitable. Inactivity prevents the body from burning calories, and it's only worse if you're snacking or sipping sweetened beverages. To prevent weight gain from sitting, get up every hour and take a spin around the office or your yard. If you're at the office all day, pack nutritious snacks or take a health supplement. 2. Aching Legs

If you've been experiencing tired and achy legs, it may be because you're not walking enough. Although it sounds counterintuitive, sitting in place all day makes your legs hurt due to stiffening muscles. It also puts you at risk for blood clots or deep vein thrombosis. Lack of movement can make your legs ache all the time or in bed, keeping you awake. This problem is easily solved with a walking routine of at least 30 minutes each day and seeing if your leg pain disappears. 

3. Back Problems

Have you noticed a crick in your neck after spending too much time on the computer? That's just the start of what can happen when you sit for too long. Sitting for hours at a time can cause back trouble, even if you invest in an expensive ergonomic chair. Poor posture causes curvature of the spine and eventual deterioration of spinal discs. Instead of sitting, try a standing desk that allows you to move around while you're doing your work.

4. Increase in Varicose Veins

Another problem that crops up when you sit for too long is varicose veins. Varicose veins develop when blood isn't moving efficiently and pools up, causing veins to bulge. These veins are usually visible in the legs and are more common in women. They can also cause discomfort the longer you don't move. To prevent varicose veins, try walking during your lunch hour, or do work-related errands on foot as much as possible. 

5. Muscle Weakness

When you lead a sedentary lifestyle, eventually you'll experience muscle weakness. Muscles need to be used every day or they'll waste away. To prevent this loss of strength, it's crucial to get moving. For example, if you love listening to music, do a little dancing while performing your household chores. Walk to the supermarket instead of driving if you need something small, or take the dog on an extended walk that benefits you both.

6. Isolation and Depression

How in the world could sitting all day depress you? Even if you love your desk job, lack of exercise deprives you of those feel-good hormones known as endorphins. If you work from home or you're retired, remaining inactive can also cause isolation. To prevent idleness from ruining your life, schedule activities with friends such as walking, shopping or hiking. Getting into the great outdoors is good for your body and mind, and may improve your work quality!

Sitting too much can cause all sorts of maladies, from obesity and depression to back and leg problems. Exercising each day and getting the proper nutrition are key to avoiding these problems.
