I am going to chime in here about Autism. Autism is very avoidable. My middle daughter became Autistic after she had a horrible reaction to vaccinations when she was around 18 months. Her little body could not handle the toxic load of multiple vaccinations she just had and her immune system had already been damaged by prior vaccinations that contained Thimerosal(mercury). Immediately after coming out of the doctor's office, she threw herself down on the ground and began hitting her head on the pavement. She screamed so loud with such an awful wail that it haunts me to this day some 16 years later. She continued screaming for a whole year. It drove my wife into chronic Depression and we divorced shortly after as she turned against me. I should have protected her from the villains who lied and said the vaccinations had nothing to do with the Autism she would soon be diagnosed with. It was and is such a tragedy. My daughter lost her empathy that day... I have to pay close attention to avoid judging her for this today. I didn't stop the vaccines even though I had negative reactions from them. Autism is genetically connected. If you have someone in your gene pool who has Autism, Narcissism, is a Sociopath, Schizophrenic, ADD or has other neurological problems then you might want to heed my words. Don't be militant about it though. They will call you a bad parent if you call them liars. Use the excuse that you want to wait until your child is 40 lbs The weight excuse is good enough for the short term and will get your child beyond the age where vaccines are tied to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome between the ages 6 months to one year old. 40 lbs. before you vaccinate. It is a reasonable argument and will give you room to breathe. The 40 Lb weight goal should also get your child where they are beyond the age where most children have the triggering event where children begin showing signs of Autism at 18 months- 3 1/2 years of age. Even when your child gets 40 lbs., and you still believe in vaccines, go slowly and check the insert in each vaccine to insure that it does not contain Thimerosal, Ethylmercury, and many other names that may be used to disguise the mercury.
They say that they took the mercury out of vaccines but it is not true. Look in the inserts for each vaccine you allow others to inject into your child's blood and see if any of the following other names for mercury are in the insert.

They may change the name to throw the wary parent off who actually looks into the ingredients of the vaccines they allow to be injected straight into a helpless babies blood..
One of the best ways to avoid getting vaccines without mercury is to avoid multiple vaccines. It may be inconvenient but it is a much better approach for protecting your child from a toxic overload than rolling the dice and praying your child doesn't contract a neurological disorder. Spread out the vaccines over several years and again, never multiple vaccines like DpT or MMR(which does not have mercury) or any of the other vaccines that may still contain mercury in spite of what the law says.
If you are going to vaccinate, again, go slow. There are many awful toxins in vaccines in their own right that do not contain mercury, so slowing down the process is still a good strategy for defending your child's health.
A good rule of thumb for choosing individual vaccines might be to research each vaccine you are considering vaccinating your child for. If there are very few deaths or outbreaks from the particular disease you are vaccinating your helpless child for, in the country you live in, then that might be a vaccine to you might pass on. Many diseases children are vaccinated for are not deadly at all but the vaccine you allow in your child's blood may actually give them the disease rather than prevent it.
If you do vaccinate, make sure to give your child lots of Vitamin C every day for about two weeks before you vaccinate. This will help boost your child's immune system. Do not give your child vaccines if they are sick or not feeling well. If you are going to let them inject toxins in your child's bloodstream, give them the best chance possible to survive it.
Weigh the potential risks for each vaccine you give the child you love. If the odds of contracting the disease are similar or equal to the same odds as being struck by lightning then that might be a vaccine worth putting off until a serious outbreak occurs in your own city(not caused by the vaccine itself). Make sure to check if there is an outbreak and insure that those with the disease were not vaccinated. Sometimes outbreaks are caused by vaccines. By vaccinating during an outbreak, you might even be giving your child a disease the vaccine was meant to prevent.
I have three year old now, who has never been vaccinated, and has only had a runny nose for a few days in her whole life. She had a stomach flu that lasted for one half of a day. She has had a fever of around 100-101 degrees two times. Her immune system was never wrecked by vaccines so she easily overcomes sickness that affects all of the other children that she plays with. She is by far the most healthy human being I have ever known. I give all of the credit to not vaccinating her, breast feeding from her mother, and avoiding dairy milk(which also comes from cows who have been heavily vaccinated). She went to a doctor's office for a check-up when she was two weeks old and has never required a doctor's visit since. My Autistic daughter is in a doctor's office being drugged and psycho analyzed every month.
I was given a traffic ticket for a new law and the officer told me that ignorance of the law is no excuse. In my daughter's case, my ignorance cost her a lifetime of serious bowel, mental, spiritual, and social calamities that grieves me to this day. Her mother still believes in doctors and if I want visits from my daughter then I have to keep my mouth shut but I am not going to let what happened to my Autistic child happen to my little one. It is not going to happen. Fool me once and it is ignorance but fooling me this time would be a crime.
There are laws for avoiding vaccines for religious or medical reason. I suggest you get some religion because if you don't you may soon be praying for your child who has been crippled with health issues that are easily preventable. It is noble to raise your Autistic child and give them the best possible life you can give them but an ounce of prevention tempered with patience and research for your healthy child is worth a pound of being the hero for your unhealthy child. I write this letter because I believe in educating over medicating. I believe that doctors are not the ones who have to live with your child whose immune system is wrecked for your ignorance. The least likely of all professionals to vaccinate are pediatricians. Do you need any more proof?

That's 631,000 children whose lives were saved by measles vaccination. The numbers are mind-boggling, especially when you consider that measles is only _one_ of the preventable diseases that is no longer a scourge of our children thanks to immunization.
As I said in reponse to another poster here, I'm sorry to hear about your autistic child and sorry to hear that vaccines are falsely getting the blame for her condition. As the latest study from California shows, autism cases have not declined even though mercury preservative was removed from vaccines years ago. There _is_ a genetic cause of autism, and we are getting closer to understanding, preventing and treating it. Targeting vaccines unjustly only endangers childrens' lives.
As noted before, the claim about pediatricians not vaccinating their children is untrue. Just like other physicians, they overwhelmingly get their kids vaccinated, because they know the consequences of leaving them unprotected.

Yes.
Intelligent people should be concerned for their children, for other people's children, and for other susceptible individuals (such as those who are immunosuppressed because of age, other infections, or cancer treatment for example) who could become severely ill or die because they caught measles from an unvaccinated child.
There are still people alive who were parents in the 1940s and 1950s and who anguished during polio epidemics that their child would get sick and become paralyzed or die. The development of the polio vaccine eliminated the disease in this country and meant that parents no longer had to fear for their children.
Today, what we really need to be afraid of is a casual attitude towards preventable infectious diseases by those who are unaware of their effects, forgotten what they used to mean, or simply blinded by prejudice against vaccines. The history of these diseases and what vaccines have done to make them rare or nonexistent is available, to all those who care to learn.

This is a reply to # 1,096,679Intelligent? Do one and 85 children who do not take the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella multiple vaccination have a triggering event that causes Autism? You know the answer to that don't you. Countries where they do not give the MMR vaccine in one dose are likely to never contract Autism. If you want to vaccinate your little underweight infant for Measles, do so as a single vaccination. The multiple vaccination is just asking for the triggering event that wrecks your child's immunes system and launches a lifetime of neurological disorders.

"When I heard Ms. McCarthy tell Oprah and Larry King that vaccines caused her son's autism, I had a flashback to a cold winter's night, 13 years ago. I was the senior pediatric resident on call in the Intensive Care Unit...
Cradled in the arms of her parents, a seven-year old girl was brought to the emergency room at Children's Hospital Boston.
The girl had come down with chickenpox a couple of days ago-she had a fever and hundreds of itchy skin lesions. Tonight, she had taken a turn for the worse. Her fever shot up to 106 and she became confused, lethargic . . . she was unresponsive and limp in her mother's arms.
The ER doctors suspected that her open sores allowed Strep bacteria to get under her skin and rage through her bloodstream. And now, she was in "multiple system organ failure"- every square inch of her body was shutting down all at once.
IV's were placed into her veins to start fluids, Antibiotics , and medications to stabilize her heart and blood pressure. She was placed on a ventilator machine to breathe. Then she was brought to the Intensive Care Unit.
By the time I met my patient, she had tubes coming out of every opening and weeping skin lesions all over her body. I was used to blood and gore, but it was hard to look at her and not cry. Imagine how her parents felt when they saw their once beautiful little girl in this grotesque state, struggling to survive.
My attending physician told me to grab dinner. This child would need me for the rest of the night.
I returned to the ICU to find that my patient had gone into cardiac arrest and died.
I watched, helplessly, as the nurses placed the little girl into a body bag...
Fast forward five months: the first chickenpox vaccine was approved. That day, I vowed never to let a child on my watch suffer from a disease that was preventable by vaccination.
That's a story that doesn't grab headlines or guest shots on Larry King. Vaccines are one of mankind's greatest scientific achievements. This year alone, vaccines prevented 14 million infections, $40 billion in medical costs, and most importantly, 33,000 deaths.

Why blame vaccines? Parents go through stages of grief when their child is diagnosed with a disorder like autism. We all want to blame someone for our suffering. and unwarranted-like chelation. That's already claimed one autistic child's life. Doctors worry that families will fall prey to unscrupulous folks selling snake oil in the hopes of curing their child.
As a pediatrician, I also want to desperately know why autism happens and how to treat it. But, let's put our energy into funding autism research and treatment . . . and not demonizing our vaccination program."

He's just mad cause we make the snake oil out of slithery doctors like him....
I can't believe this guy is a doctor, he doesn't mention anything about the toxic substances in vaccines, he just totally omits it from his article he never addresses it even once. I supposed he has a better way of removing toxic heavy metals that vaccines contain than chelation, No probably not, he must think people should store heavy metals in their body from cradle to grave.

The doctor who just administered multiple vaccination to my infant...when she wailed and banged her head on the ground just outside the doctor's office, said the scream and head banging had nothing to do with vaccine they had just given her! If they were turning all of the children in the neighborhood into sausages, would that be the threshold where you would raise the red flag that something was seriously wrong? I will never....and I mean never...ever... e.v.e.r. E.V.E.R. trust a pediatrician again. Okay.
That doctor knew what had just occurred my child and lied. I have had to pay a high price for that lie. It destroyed my marriage, it held the truth back about the dangers of vaccines. One in 85 children are now diagnosed in the Autism Spectrum and that may seem good odds for you to risk your child's life for a lie but it is not good odds for me. I was one of the unlucky ones. Go find someone else to argue with about demonizing
vaccinations with. I will not concede to anyone who says that vaccines are not the triggering event that leads to Autism.

- In 1979, Sweden abandoned the whooping cough vaccine due to its ineffectiveness. Out of 5,140 cases in 1978, it was found that 84% had been vaccinated three times!

-The February 1981 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association found that 90% of obstetricians and 66% of pediatricians refused to take the rubella vaccine.
- In the USA, the cost of a single DPT shot had risen from 11 cents in 1982 to $11.40 in 1987. The manufacturers of the vaccine were putting aside $8 per shot to cover legal costs and damages they were paying out to parents of brain damaged children and children who died after vaccination.

- In the USA, from July 1990 to November 1993, the US Food and Drug Administration counted a total of 54,072 adverse reactions following vaccination. The FDA admitted that this number represented only 10% of the real total, because most doctors were refusing to report vaccine injuries. In other words, adverse reactions for this period exceeded half a million!

- In the New England Journal of Medicine July 1994 issue a study found that over 80% of children under 5 years of age who had contracted whooping cough had been fully vaccinated.
The CDC states that 135 children died during the 2003-2004 flu season.
59 of these children had received their flu shots.
- On November 2nd 2000, the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) announced that its members voted at their 57th annual meeting in St Louis to pass a resolution calling for an end to mandatory childhood vaccines. The resolution passed without a single "no" vote.

This is a reply to # 1,096,679As I said before, DB, put down your info. and look at other sources. By the way, vaccines can cause a fever and doesn't give protection from measles anyway. The cdc or whoever your getting your info. wants people to believe these diseases cause epidemics so people will keep on vaccinating.
I am not going to vaccinate my children for you or anyone else. You said the info. is available for those who want to learn. That works both ways. It depends on what info. you want- the truth or lies.
You didn't answer my other question, about being tied somehow to vaccines through your job. What is your real motive?
By the way, I have learned through my research that children die from chicken pox when they are given medication (like tylenol) instead of letting the pox work through their system. I would gather that going to a hospital that the girl who died from chicken pox in your story was given medication. That was my first ped.'s scare tactic to keep vaccinating (I fired him!). He told me that some girl in Mexico died of chicken pox. Chicken pox used to be so common, everyone used to have it. Now we just want to vaccinate for it.

Part 2 of 2. Three-year old Julia is napping when I arrive at the spare, neat, cheerful house on Musser School Road near the town of Leola in Lancaster County.
She is the reason I have driven through the budding countryside on this perfect spring day, but I really do not need to meet her.
In the last column, I wrote about trying to find autistic Amish people here in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch country, and noted there should be dozens of them -- if autism occurs at the same prevalence as the rest of the United States.
So far, there is evidence of only three, all of them children, the oldest age 9 or 10. Julia is one of them. I found out about her through a pediatrician in Richmond, Va., Dr. Mary Megson. I had been asking around for quite some time about autism and the Amish, and she provided the first direct link.

Megson said she would give my name to this child's mother, who could call if she chose. A few days later the phone rang. It was Stacey-jean Inion, an Amish-Mennonite woman. She, her husband Brent and their four children live simply, but they do drive a vehicle and have a telephone. After a few pleasantries, I told her about my trying to find autistic Amish.
Here is what she said, verbatim:
"Unfortunately our autistic daughter -- who's doing very well, she's been diagnosed with very, very severe autism -- is adopted from China, and so she would have had all her vaccines in China before we got her, and then she had most of her vaccines given to her in the United States before we got her.
"So we're probably not the pure case you're looking for."
Maybe not, but it was stunning that Julia Inion, the first autistic Amish person I could find, turned out to be adopted -- from another country, no less. It also was surprising that Stacey-jean launched unbidden into vaccines, because the Amish have a religious exemption from vaccination and presumably would not have given it much thought.
She said a minority of Amish families do, in fact, vaccinate their children these days, partly at the urging of public health officials.
"Almost every Amish family I know has had somebody from the health department knock on our door and try to convince us to get vaccines for our children," she said. "The younger Amish more and more are getting vaccines. It's a minority of children who vaccinate, but that is changing now."
Did she know of any other autistic Amish? Two more children, she said.
"One of them, we're very certain it was a vaccine reaction, even though the government would not agree with that."
Federal health officials have said there is no association between vaccinations and autism or learning disabilities.
"The other one I'm not sure if this child was vaccinated or not," she added.
During my visit to their home, I asked Stacey-jean to explain why she attributed the first case to vaccines.
"There's one family that we know, their daughter had a vaccine reaction and is now autistic. She was walking and functioning and a happy bright child, and 24 hours after she had her vaccine, her legs went limp and she had a typical high-pitched scream. They called the doctor and the doctor said it was fine -- a lot of high-pitched screaming goes along with it.
"She completely quit speaking," Stacey-jean said. "She completely quit making eye contact with people. She went in her own world."
This happened, Stacey-jean said, at "something like 15 months." The child is now about 8.
For similar reasons, Julia Inion's Chinese background is intriguing. China, India and Indonesia are among countries moving quickly to mass-vaccination programs. In some vaccines, they use a mercury-based preservative called thimerosal that keeps multiple-dose vials from becoming contaminated by repeated needle sticks.
Thimerosal was phased out of U.S. vaccines starting in 1999, after health officials became concerned about the amount of mercury infants and children were receiving. The officials said they simply were erring on the side of caution, and that all evidence favors rejection of any link between Autism Spectrum Disorders and thimerosal, or vaccines themselves.
Julia's vaccinations in China -- all given in one day at about age 15 months -- may well have contained thimerosal; the United States had stopped using it by the time she was born, but other countries with millions to vaccinate had not.
Stacey-jean said photographs of Julia taken in China before she was vaccinated showed a smiling alert child looking squarely at the camera. Her original adoptive family in the United States, overwhelmed trying to cope with an autistic child, gave Julia up for re-adoption. The Inions took her in knowing her diagnosis of severe autism.
I tried hard -- and am still trying -- to find people who know about other autistic Amish. Of the local health and social service agency personnel in Lancaster, some said they dealt with Amish people with disabilities, such as mental retardation, but none recalled seeing an autistic Amish.
Still, I could be trapped in a feedback loop: The Amish I am likeliest to know about -- because they have the most contact with the outside world -- also are likeliest to adopt a special-needs child such as Julia from outside the community, and likeliest to have their children vaccinated.
Another qualifier: The Inions are converts to the Amish-Mennonite religion (Brent is an Asian-American). They simply might not know about any number of autistic Amish sheltered quietly with their families for decades.
It also is possible the isolated Amish gene pool might confer some kind of immunity to autism -- which might be a useful topic for research.
Whatever the case, Stacey-jean thinks the autistic Amish are nowhere to be found.
"It is so much more rare among our people," she said. "My husband just said last week that so far we've never met a family that lives a healthy lifestyle and does not vaccinate their children that has an autistic child. We haven't come across one yet."
"Everywhere I go (outside the Amish community) I find children who are autistic, just because I have an autistic daughter -- in the grocery store, in the park, wherever I go. In the Amish community, I simply don't find that."
