I use milk kefir grains for kefiring both milk and coconut water. The grains won't grow in the coco water, so I alternate with the milk to keep them alive. I'm back to drinking milk again, but when I wasn't, I gave the kefired milk to my dog. It helped a lot with a staph infection she had.
Most people get grains from someone who is willing to share the grains that they have. I've heard there are places online you can purchase them, also.
Body Ecology makes a kefir starter that is really good. This is not the same as using the grains - it's a probiotic powder - but works really well. I don't think it has dairy in it, though I could be wrong. In any case, The Body Ecology diet was developed to deal with candida issues so the starter wouldn't have anything in it that would make the condition worse.
