This is a reply to # 1,474,057It depends on if the DE has been purified or not. Purified DE has been pre-treated with acids to remove the metal oxides from the product. Then it is washed and dried leaving behind pretty much pure silica.

I am not too happy with this Al content, I didn't research any analysis before purchasing, I only listened to people who had beneficial results from taking DE. I feel that 1100 parts per million is way too high to ignore. If water had that much it would be considered too toxic to drink. The amount of silicon is miniscule compared to the aluminum and that is why I bought it--for the silica! Live and learn..now I have this huge 10 pound jar of the stuff. The cats eat it up mixed into their food, the dog won't.

CHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF DIATOMACEOUS EARTHS
Three separate samplings and analyses of PermaGuard's Diatomaceous earth, compared with another brand available on the market for human consumption, indicates that the PermaGuard material has significantly fewer toxic minerals. These analyses were performed by extracting the diatomaceous earth with concentrated sulfuric or nitric acid for extended periods of time and analyzing the acidic extracts. The elements so removed are considered to be at far higher concentrations than the level of toxins that could be extracted by the much more dilute acid found in our stomachs. Note that only the aluminum in PermaGuard exceeds that of Brand X.
This amount of aluminum is of minimal concern for several reasons. First, the amounts determined are only a small fraction of the aluminum that one normally encounters in ones diet. Secondly, concerns about aluminum in antiperspirants seems to be secondary to poisonings with other metals such as nickel. In the authors case, DEtoxing to remove nickel poisoning caused his "allergies to antiperspirants" to go away. Thus, antiperspirants probably prevent the lymphatics and sweat glands from getting rid of metals and other toxins, essentially bottling these up inside of our skin and bodies.
The author also noted an increase in aluminum in his hair analysis while DEtoxing with PermaGuard's product. It is thought that since nickel ions are slightly larger than magnesium ions and aluminum ions are slightly smaller, that nickel and aluminum may have been deposited in his bones instead of magnesium. Stress fractures and tears in the articulation of tendons and ligaments with his bones could have accounted for the arthritic-like pains the author was experiencing. As the nickel was pulled out during the DEtox, it is thought that magnesium was then able to displace the aluminum, and the author has noted a continuing improvement in the strength and function of his joints as the aluminum seems to be dumping out of his system in his hair analysis. His knees do not even pop anymore, even when doing deep knee squats and holding a 150 to 200 lb. person in his arms (NOT RECO

If the Permaguard is little fossilized diatoms that are whole when viewed under a microscope, how could they be purified?
I have heard many good things about Permaguard, but have stopped using it since I became aware of its aluminum content.

I have recently learned about DE. EarthWorks Health copied the Perma Gaurd analysis Chem lab part and left out the analysis information, so I contacted Galen D Knight at Vitale Theraputics, Inc. He linked me up to the full analysis report. He stated DE basically picked up toxins in the body and removed them, that being the DE-tox part. The removal of toxins alows the body to do its thing better. (My interpretation of his words.) The aluminum found in the hair is how the body is removing it.
Have you stopped using aluminum products? Deoderants, food or drinks stored in aluminum and pots, pans, and etc.?
I was more interested in the product for its pest control. Being non toxic to both pets and humans. My animals to not show signs of flea, ticks, mites problems, but I am getting bit by something. I figured I could "dust" my rugs, bed, linens and my pets to get rid of the "no-see-ums."
EarthWorks Health has the best price I have seen for DE. I am not sure about the sanitary conditions it is packaged under. In 2005 the FDA sent Custom Feed Services Corporation (the mother company) a warning letter on documentation and cleanliness of the facility. At present I am waiting for a call back from the FDA for more information.
If I am only going to use the DE product for pest control, I would have not problem purchasing from EarthWorks Health. I have e-mailed and called EarhtWorks Health and waiting for contact.
So have you used the DE? For how long? If you were enemic it would take approximately six months on iron supplements to bring iron and feritin levels back to normal.

I dusted some on my cat and dog and put some in their food,
I took 3 days myself in a row until I discovered the 1100 ppm of Al from the analysis sheet...
The tapwater here contains 436 pm or even a little more (it changes) of solids, flouride being less than 1 ppm. If the water had 1100 ppm of anything it, that would be scary.
I have heard good reports of people using DE but as we know, one cannot feel aluminum building up in the body or brain!
I have this huge massive jar of the stuff, I may as well use it now and then to get a better "feel" for it...
it does seem to work very well on the animals to stop the fleas and itching.
I mean, does it seem gullible to believe that something that contains a high amount of aluminum is producing high amounts of aluminum in the hair because it is actually removing it from the body, not because it is being consumed?
It seems a little far fetched, but I am open to this being true, the research continues!

I don't know...I am not using the DE anymore. I am going to put it directly into the trashcan.
1100 ppm of Al is not healthy for me or my beloved pets. People selling thier products will tell you otherwise.
I consulted a couple biologists and chemical bioligists at work, they all made a face or an uh-oh expression at that amount of aluminum in something that would be intended for consuming, and none of them said they'd take it themselves,
Silica is found in many other sources, this just isn't for me.
Maybe I will save it to pour on ants or something.
Live and learn!
I did find I was very very tired after the few days of taking it, reminded me of when I was anemic.

Further analysis of the Perma-Guard's product in a MALDI mass spectrometer with...
....and without matrix.....
....and with the DiHydroxyBenzoic (DHB) acid matrix, but without diatomaceous earth.....
....show that there are virtually none of the potential toxins identified supra available on the surface of this particular diatomaceous earth, the UV laser being unable to blast anything loose from the surface. This means that the diatomaceous earth surface coming in contact with the body is extremely clean, even lowering the background in the mass spectrometer in many instances.

I can see that Earthypowder's post is over 6 years old and that he is, or is quoting verbatim, Dr. Galen Daryl Knight's (VitaleTherapeutics, Inc.), response to the heavy metal content in DE. That writer is very familiar with Diatomaceous Earth/DE, has a PhD, and he's smart. However, I'm new to DE and this site, only have an AA in office administration, and confused about long-term affects of DE.
I want to find out more about the heavy metal issue regarding DE. I read the above explanation several times but still don't really understand what makes it safe. My life experiences do not include a lot of background information and understanding of health-related issues. I don't have a clue what DE MALDI, DE Neat, DHB Blank or any other related chart that he mentioned means.
Do I understand him correctly? That during testing, DE with it's bad heavy metals is subjected to high acid content, higher than the stomach's, and then blasted in a way to try to remove the Al from the DE? And even then, it does not separate from the DE? Therefore, it cannot digest and therefore, no Aluminum can remain in the body?
Again, I am missing some background in order to understand this. I thought the reason metal stays in our bodies is because we cannot digest it and it therefore lodges inside of us forever ????? Is he saying the opposite?..... that it won't stay in our bodies because we cannot digest it?
Also, he mentions hair analysis. I need more background info here too. Just recently, I read somewhere that hair is like a sponge and it detoxifies us in some way - that it's part of the filtering system, along with the liver (?). That was news to me! Is this true? If so, what he's saying about that portion would make sense.
Most people looking for an answer to their health problems don't have his background. They're toxic/sick in one way or another. Thus keeping them confused and overwhelmed easily. (YES, I AM TALKING ABOUT MYSELF.) So what seems easy to comprehend to him may be over someone else's head due to their lack of education or because they're being effected by bacteria, viruses, metals, parasites, etc. Like me, they may be too afraid to try the solution because they're missing basic information; too concerned about doing fatal harm through it because, after all, it defies common sense. How something can have Aluminum in it but at the same time, free you from it through drinking it. Additionally, the long list of claims seem "too good to be true," even though I desperately want them to be true.
This is where I'm at. The last thing I need is to give myself another health problem.... I know there must be others in this situation.
DE has been consumed for many years now - the offered, referenced lab report is from 1999 after all! Where are case studies done since then?
Anybody? Please clarify if you truly understand how consuming DE can leave you better off regarding heavy metals? Do you have any test results to share?
Is there anyone else out there wondering the same things?

This is a reply to # 2,280,887When a metals analysis is made, heavy duty acids are used. To effect solubulization of silica, hydroflouric acid is used, as well as possibly nitric, sulfuric, and hydrochloric acids.
In contrast, I have read that our stomach contains 0.1M HCl(plus enzymes), which aren't terribly efficient where silica is concerned. (My background is in digestion and analysis of samples for metals analysis, among other environmental concerns.) I have MTHFR mutations(deals with processing of heavy metals, among a million other things), and I will follow this discussion with interest. I have noticed NO ill effects from using DE, myself.
I think the concern is unwarranted because the material will pass out mostly undigested.
