I shaved my head a year ago, and have been able to pretty much control the infection since, bar the odd small spot.
I have tried to grow my hair again, whilst cleaning my scalp with H202 and Isopropyl, but the infection returned after 3-4 days, so I had to shave again.
I found a great article on the effects of essential oils on staph infections:
The results tables clearly show that Lemongrass, Lemon, White Thyme, and Cinnamon Oils are the most effective at killing our little friends.
I've also had good success with Oil Of Oregano.
So....I bought all the above oils, and from 2 weeks ago, followed this regime (a bit lengthy, but I want to tell all the details)
Every morning, I wash and dry my hair, then douse my scalp with Oregano Oil, which I leave on for the day. It has quite a strong smell, but I've had positive comments on my new aftershave! The oil makes my scalp red for a few minutes, but it quickly goes back to normal colour.
Then at night, I've covered my scalp in different combinations of oils before bed, as follows:
Day 1: Lemongrass *20 drops, Cinnamon*1 drop
Day 2: White Thyme*20, Cinnamon*1
Day 3: Lemon*20, Cinnamon*1
Day 4: Lemon*1, Thyme*1
Day 5: Lemon*10, Lemongrass*10, Cinnamon*1
Day 6: Lemon*1, Thyme*1
Day 7: Lemongrass*1, Thyme*1
Day 8: Lemon*1, Lemon*1
Day 9: Lemongrass*10, Thyme*10, Cinnamon*1
Day 10 Lemon
Day 11 Lemongrass
Day 12 Thyme
not necessarily in that order.
Up to now (2 weeks), I've only had 2 very small spots of infection, and I guess that they are where I've missed putting the oil on my scalp. As soon as I found them, I doused them in Oregano, and within an hour, the infection subsided.
I'm using different combinations of oils to keep the chemical compounds changing constantly, so the infection cannot build immunity. I'll be making more mixtures, the possibility is endless.
I have 2 types of Oregano, 1 bought off USA Ebay, and another from oilsshop.com. The oilsshop.com oregano is much more potent, and I jump on it at any sign of possible infection.
But I use the one I bought on Ebay during the day, as it doesn't smell as strong, and my skin only goes red for 2-3 minutes.
I'm amazed that after 2 weeks, I have a 100% infection free scalp, this was impossible before.....I can't stop looking in the mirror, I have hair again!!
It's still early days, so I'm not counting my chickens, but I thought I should share all this info. with everybody, to give them the option of trying it, especially before a full shave.
Beware: Cinnamon Oil is ultra-strong, at first use it ultra sparingly. Even mixed with another oil at a ratio of 30:1 , it will still cause a reaction.
I had the advantage of starting this regime when I had a clean, shaved scalp. I don't know if it will work well enough for someone with hair, and infection, but definitely worth a go, I believe.
I was also lucky in that last year when I was badly infected, I was left with no bald patches, so I can't comment on the effect on this.
