Okay there are herx reactions to be expected and its hard to judge when a probiotic is causing large amounts of gas (light, like hydrogen) whether it's because it's "die off" (but die off gas would smell wouldn't it?) or if its because the organisms are not strong enough and the bad bacteria are overwhelming it..?
but what does it mean when probiotics cause constipation? I dont get this, and no one has a theory behind this. My bloating was in bad shape and so i took natren's healthy trinity for 2 months, and got better. (not 100% but still). but after 2 months i found out i started getting constipated and realize it was the natrens.
tried theralac, and theralac seemed to constipate me almost immediately and even gave me heartburn and it has a really high lactobacteria count so i am guessing it's blocking up my small intestine and producing lactic acid and its coming up my throat.
customprobiotics - caused constipation when i increase the dose to adult dose.
pretty much every probiotic causes constipation. and it seems there are a few people out there that this happens to. I've been off of probiotics and im having a BM everyday but my bloating (prob from SIBO) is not resolved.
is it that i'm not taking enough...? or too much..? ive gotten both answers from 2 different companies. too many of lacto or of bifido?

It could be... have you tried more?

It could be... have you tried more, or less of one or the other?
Pending the above, it could also be strains taken... have you tried a product like SCD, LB17, or Ohhira's? An HSO/SBO? What were the results? A strictly lacto OR bifidus product? What were the results?
How about home fermented foods and/or dairy? what are the results?
What is your diet like? Does it support a healthy "terrain" for the flora? Or, are you taking them, with a poor terrain to begin with, and then eating poorly on top of it, while expecting them to do some good for you, when you are not good to them by eating and drinking poorly?
Won't work well. Even so, unless you have a damaged mucosa, most decent products should, for the most part decrease flatulence, they will not eliminate it altogether, however, things also depend on your current state of health (condition of intestinal mucosa for one) and what you do or don't do to support them.
as we are all different... different people are likely to experience different effects... You could answer your own questions.
From personal experience and expreimentation with different products, I can tell you that Ohhira's product increases flatulence for me... LB17 or SCD, nearly eliminate it all together... I have had others tell me the opposite... VSL#3 is supposed to reduce gas in IBS patients... as illustrated in some studies. However, as I stated, we are all different In other words, YMMV and you need to figure it out for yourself.
All another can do is give you an idea what has worked for them.

Not bad at all.
I do take issue with her change in stance on SBO's...
bacteria and fungus form spores... this is further proof of Bechamp... she probably has not studied him or the pleomorphism of these single cells... or did not comprehend it, or the research done by dozens more that supports it.
It is not something to shy away from...
we breathe in spores with every breath we take... being overwhelmed by mold spores is the problem people have with breathing when mold overtakes their homes. A warning that our environment is changing - just another canary in the coal mine... to those that have mold problems in their homes... mix lime water in your paint.

This is a reply to # 1,571,837I found out what it was. Wrong type/strain of probiotics (for me). Ive tried so many different ones out there but decided after mxied responsed or bad response, that i needed to isolate. i make an educated leap and decided i might do better on just bifidobacteria, no lacto. And sure enough, i was right. Starting with first day, lots of gas and bloating (which is normal regardless of any probiotic) but had a great bowel movement in the morning. And ever since. The way i know a probiotic is working and that the gas and bloating is just acclimating to the probiotic, is that GOOD probiotics don't constipate me. Only bad ones do. And by bad, I mean bad for me.. it doesn't work with my gut. Everyone is different. i do NOT do well on lactobacillus acidolphius. In fact, it causes gas, constipation pretty bad and also heart burn which i never have. Too much lactic acid and d-lactate.
Problem solved!
Now, time to add in a single strain that doesn't produce D-lactate of lacto species and see if i can get this acidolphilus overgrowth under control.

This is a reply to # 1,571,988most people need more bifidobacteria or bifidobacteria only... for any number of reasons... including over use of colon/ Liver Flushes and enemas.
Unfortunately most products are very anemic in bifidus counts/viability... if the product includes bifidus at all.
...though a bifidobacteria retention enema can be the best way to repopulate the large intestine.

This is a reply to # 1,572,235Yeah it was a long journey but i got closer to the answer at least. Cost tons of money on diff probiotics too. My naturopath and all my doctors have it in their head that all probiotics are the same and discount the fact that every single person is different and the gut balance is so complex. the GI that administered by SIBO test was the only one hat truly seemed to understand with extensive knowledge that you can't just go cramming acidolphilus down your throat and think probiotics didn't work. there are so many different strains out there.
I never got breast fed, took broad spectrum Antibiotics as a kid 4X a year for 7 years straight. Naturally i figured my bifido species would be low.

Everyone's gut must be different, and if medical Science would bother paying attention, lots of people would really be helped.
What is needed is to sample the gut flora, and then prescribe the missing ones and to control the ones that overgrow. Establishing the right gut flora for everyone would be a standard medical practice.
In a sane world, this is what would be done. But ours is not a sane world.

I've had a similar issue with a probiotic I recently started, and noticed that it also contains two strains of lacto in addition to bifido. I'm interested in trying bifido alone to see if that helps, and am wondering what product you found that has bifido alone?

This is a reply to # 1,679,704I actually found through experimentation with numerous supplements from different companies, that it doesnt seem to be related to bifido or lacto. Metagenics has one with bifido only called Bifoviden but it seemed to be the worst constipator for me and my mom who tried it. There's one called "align" sold at walmart and the pharmacy which worked well though and that has bifantis in it. Currently im taking culturelle which is a lactobacillus strain and it worked the best for me.
Through testing, i found lots of yeast and fungal issues (non candida species) in my small intestine and also probably my colon and for that reason, i think that probiotics end up constipating me somehow. Not really sure of the actual mechanism behind it but it could be related to the probiotics being killed and unable to do its job or my doctor suggested that it could be that since yeast causes loose stool, that my gut has adapted to its effects and taking probiotics is having the oppositive effect which should go away after adjustment or when the fungal issues are gone.
I know that all of it will go away when the fungal issues are taken care of though.
Also, jarrow makes one called bifidofactor which is pretty cheap and reliable.- Re: Probiotics CAUSING constipation origins

This is a reply to # 1,679,891I was actually searching for combination of words constipation and probiotic. And your last post gives me some hope. As I'm fighting candida. This is a reply to # 2,175,681Same here. I also have candida overgrowth and I notice sometimes taking probiotics constipate me. Is constipation really a sign of progress??
