Periwinkle actually contains several brain enhancers including vinpocetine and vincamine.
The dosage of periwinkle will depend on the form you are taking. The powder is very difficult to find, which is why I have to buy such large quantities for my my memory formula. It is a special order so I cannot buy a pound or two. On the general market I have only seen it sold cut or tinctured. And both the common periwinkle (V. minor) and Madagascar periwinkle (V. rosea, C. Rosea) are offered in tinctures. You want common periwinkle, not Madagascar periwinkle. Madagascar periwinkle is the source for the chemotherapy drugs vincristine and vinblastine.
If you go with the vinpocetine capsules then I recommend 1 capsule 3 times daily.
Regardless of which one you go with you need to take them with herbs to hold moisture in the intestines since the alkaloids fry up the intestinal secretions leading to constipation. Good choices are seaweeds, marshmallow root, slippery elm or yucca root.
Is it ok if the Periwinkle powder is "cut and sifted"?
If you just want to swallow it rather than extract it then the cut and sifted will have to be ground in to a powder. Otherwise the cut and sifted will have to made in to a tea or tincture.
So Hver, you are ok with supplementing with Vinpocetine tablets but prefer Periwinkle powder as the overall better choice between the two? I just want the strongest and most effective option. Central Sleep apnea has done a number on my mind/brain over the years. I need to get oxygen to my starving brain.
I do prefer herbs as Nature made them in most cases. As I pointed out Nature creates compounds that help act as balancers and plants rarely if ever have one active component. The only reason compounds are isolated and synthesized is the same reason the pharmaceutical companies do this. Money. Naturally occurring compounds are not patentable. But isolating a compound and making a synthetic of it allows it to be patented giving that company somewhat exclusive rights to what is really now nothing more than a drug.
The isolated synthetic is going to be stronger on a gram for gram basis. But you also take less of the isolate. If taking a dose of the herbal more is taken and between the amount of alkaloids and the synergistic effect the results should be the same or stronger. So the biggest difference is convenience and availability.
And both will still dry up the intestines and therefore should be taken with herbs to retain intestinal moisture.
periwinkle extract doesn`t contains vinpocetine. That plant is a source of vincamine, which is the precursor of vinpocetine, and it is necessary a chemical processing to obtain vinpocetine. There's only a plant (Cryoceras longiflorus) which contains a little amount of vinpocetine.
From what I have seen in the past from sources periwinkle does contain vinpocetine. It is in the seeds. But there is not enough to make it commercially viable. Therefore commercial vinpocetine is synthesized by tweaking the vincamine molecule to produce vinpocetine for the commercial market.
I'd recommend you to use the pure substance, because it's easier to monitor the right dosage.
Again I disagree. When people isolate a single compound from a plant they can alter the properties of the plant for one thing. If you isolate the coumarins from alfalfa you have a blood thinner when the whole plant is not due to the vitamin K.
Secondly, herbs have more than one active compound. Many times these active compounds work synergisitcally. If you only take vinpocetine then what about the other alkaloids with similar effects such as the vincamine and vinburnine?
I am curious do you eat isolates for food? In other words do you only take phenylalanine instead of eating a steak? Only take magnesium supplements instead of eating chlorophyll sources?................ If not then why? After all it would be so much easier to monitor the right dosage of nutrients. Or do you eat whole foods because the compounds in the food as nature made it works together?
If people want concentrated isolates that are not balanced then they might as well take pharmaceutical drugs since they are the same principle.
