I'm considering starting an intensive weight training routine for building muscular mass.
I will of course need an abundance of animal protein in the diet to accomplish this.
According to my calculations I can either eat 700-800 grams of fish or meat daily + 6 eggs daily, or drink a little more than 1 liter of blood to get the same amount of protein (blood contains almost 170 g protein per liter which is amazing).
My question then, is drinking blood dangerous?
I know that various foods made from blood are perfectly safe, like blood sausage which I've eaten a lot. But they contain too little blood for my purposes (blood sausage is 38% blood and 62% junk). But what about drinking it raw?
I'm also aware of the high iron levels in blood and the dangers of that, but the body uses up more iron when exercising so I hope that shouldn't be a problem.
One problem with drinking blood would be that protein should not be consumed without fat, but I could drink it with a fatty meal or something.
The only thing I'm concerned about are various infectious diseases and if they are commonly present in blood? The blood would not be fresh from an animal, but purchased frozen (I think) from a butchery.
Is there anything I can do to kill any bacteria or virus in it? I can't boil it because it will coagulate, won't it?
I figure that since people eat raw meat, raw dairy (including milk), raw fish and such, that it should probably be ok to drink raw blood. But I wanted to see if anyone else has some input on this.
Thanks.
