Re: ANYONE DOING SCD DIET for Candida? (specific carbohydrate)

Hi Anja,

I've been using SCD for nearly six months now. In the beginning I didn't realise candida was the issue - I couldn't tolerate fruit without feeling sick, and couldn't tolerate vegetables without pain. The only vegetable I had was carrot in soup. So I just stuck at the meat, fish, eggs, 24 hour yogurt, with occasional nut recipe. I can now handle vegetables, but I do use enzymes to help out.

I found too much honey would cause a burning sensation, so I started limiting honey instinctively. Later I figured out the candida link (sinus issues / perfume intolerance in particular), and began to read as much about candida as I could.

SCD has significantly improved my symptoms. I highly recommend it, although I don't believe it is the /only/ method. SCD works, for the majority of people who stick at it and follow it properly.

The reason for the bifidus exclusion is that initially it was recommended, but a large proportion of the SCDers became quite sick on it - as bifido-type bacteria have more of a tendency to overgrow that the lactobacilli. Of course, bifido-type bacteria work very well for some people - Elaine was cautious, and wanted a completely safe diet for people (who in some cases were near dying from GI issues).

Most SCDers seem to congregate at the yahoo groups (BTVS-SCD, pecanbread, Healing Crow). At the official group, BTVS-SCD, I've put up a lot of links to help someone on SCD. There was a mailing list at Long Island, but it is soon to be defunct.

Here are two websites to start you off:
[official web page, although the Webmaster hasn't corrected his mistake on yogurt making - the milk should be cooled to room temperature or below, before adding culture];
- aimed for parents of children on SCD, but has great general information

I would recommend you restart the diet again, once you get the book and read some more about the introduction diet. The intro diet is very good, and kills off a large amount of pathogens in the gut. Even the veterans fall back to the intro diet if they ever get into strife.

good luck,
