It may simply give you more time to get ready, plan and research your stopping points, get input and ideas and generally start while just gearing up.
Things happen for a reason, and it may be that your path is just getting laid out for you.
I was watching the author or 'A New Earth" and he felt the same as you do: One day he just woke up (in the UK I believe) and said: "I must move to America" - and the feeling was so strong that he did - he did not know why until much, much later, when he was writing "The Power of Now" that he realized that the book was to be written here, as when he traveled back, he could only edit or proof read, but writing only returned when he returned to America.
So - as he says things come to you at the right time.

I'd also say to check out the series "5 Takes... ((Latin America) [etc...])", they only travel for 3 months but it gives you an idea of the countries and their people.
