If we eat the Standard American Diet (SAD), yes we eat way too much salt... but the kind of salt we eat this way is refined (processed) table salt. That is one reason why processed food is so bad for us. About 80% of processed food in the USA grocery contains some sort of GMO ingredient and we have not even touched the 3,000 plus chemical food additives such as aspertame, MSG, food colors, flavors etc. Sorry about the side track...
When refined salt is stripped of its co-factor trace minerals it becomes a toxin of sorts that works slowly over time to cause great ill.
Unrefined natural salts though are a completely different story and can bring much health when used properly. It does not take much; pennies a day.
I am living proof that the two salts are very different. In March 2005 I had a bp of 170/110... one of the first things I did was almost totally eliminate processed foods from my diet and table salt. I do eat unrefined salt and drink sole in the morning. My bp now is 115/75 - 130/85 on any given day at various times.
