Well, the pool I grew up swimming in those long summers was creek-fed. OUr town has always been shunned by the country when it has come to providing services like water, and cable more recently -- now I can see some advantages (though back then a well seemed kind of country-mouse, and not having cable was of course the 8th-grade equivalent of having horns on one's head. People stayed away as they could not watch MTV (also really new then). One net effect, though, has been an adult life free of television. (I must confess I have a weakness for the Sunday political talk shows, HBA series of yore, and so foth -- but I have learned how to appreciate TV w/o being elslaved to it...
