To give you credit, distilled water exposed to the atmosphere DOES take up carbon dioxide. This has the effect of lowering the pH. But keep in mind, water with carbonic acid in it is NOT pure water. But in practice, it would be awfully hard to drink water while protecting it from the atmosphere.
