Hi steh,

Malic acid in apples is what softens stones. Instead of apple juice anything with malic acid would do the same job. I take apple cider vinegar, it is just as effective. I have diabetes and cannot take large quantities of apple juice as it has too much sugar.

There are several other stones softeners that you could try. Here is an abstract from Cure Zone forum:
