How do you know if it's a stone?

Just out of curiousity...

I had a few unusual 'floaters' yesterday. Two were about the size of orange pits, one was about as big as a large raisan. They had smoothe exteriors, and resembled ear wax in terms of color and texture. I attempted to determine their consistency by applying pressure with a Q-tip. They didn't break apart like a BM would, but slowly disolved with consistent pressure from the Q-tip, and smushed a little bit.

Is there any way to be sure whether or not they're actual stones? How normal is it to pass stones in day to day life? I've been taking lecithin and milk thistle, and on a lark started eating one or two cheap peppermint candies from CVS a day last week. I think the peppermint may have been a catalyst for moving things out, but I'd like to be sure it's actually stones that I'm seeing.

Also, is peppermint safe to take regularly?
