Re: Only in the heads of the authors
I don't know if you're aware of it or not, but more and more physicians and
medical institutions are going high protein in the treatment of Type II.
Dr. Bernstein - a Type I from age 12 and now 76 years old (ancient for a Type
I), was a pioneer in that direction. He is the one who originated home
blood sugar monitoring at a time when you had to be a doctor to buy one (his
wife was) and the device cost over $600, weighed three pounds and took a full
minute to display the results. He tested 5 times a day and eventually
narrowed it down to the fact that carbohydrates were the one and only thing that
raised his blood sugar - but nobody in the medical community would listen to
him. So, at age 45 he started medical school and on graduation started his
own diabetes practice. His method is a maximum of 4 carbohydrates per meal
for a total of 12 per day with no limitation on fat! His story is here:

His own web page is here:

An internationally recognized clinic in Seattle, Washington, Virginia Mason,
has been researching diabetes since 1923. They put all of their Type II
diabetics (many thousands) onto a similar diet with a restriction of 15
carbohydrates per meal - 45 a day maximum. No limit on type of meat or
fat, just carbos. Here's their web page:

Many people erroneously believe that a low carbohydrate diet causes health
problems - the Inuit and the Masai prove that isn't true. The Inuit eat
mostly red meat, some fish, loads of fat, and some vegetables. The Masai
eat blood, milk and meat. I will admit that there are aboriginals who eat
many more vegetables who don't get Type II, but they don't eat processed food
either.
I do agree that processed foods - particularly carbohydrates, cause health
problems. We were designed before the advent of agriculture and the
explosion of grains - and they are a major contributor to health problems.
There have been several autopsies of Egyptian mummies and they have been found
to have atherosclerosis in about the same percentage as people on the Western
diet. They consumed whole grains - which are pushed by medical practitioners
as "beneficial." Many people are allergic to grains and don't
even know it. I gave a copy of Mercola's "No Grain Diet" book to
my vegetarian granddaughter, and in the first week of going on it she lost 10
pounds and she wasn't even overweight. Everything she lost was around her
middle.
The American Diabetic Association diet will kill you.
