My tooth had been dead for 20 years, yes the dentist killed it when he cleaned out the nerve and blood supply. What other part of the body would we essentially call in a taxidermist to hollow out and preserve tissue then leave it in the body? I asked to keep the extracted tooth and put it in a cup. The smell was horrible even weeks later and this was a part of me! You're very lucky that you beat it, if they were dead it would cause a severe infection as they rotted resulting in an abscess and fever you couldn't ignore. It is always best to keep your natural teeth, anything else even an implant is a second rate compromise.
