Re: Xylitol and Cancer
Saywhydoi, THANKS for posting those two articles!
Hi Everyone, Finding the first one has been a challenge for me. (If it's not a challenge for you, please find it online, or in a medical library. And review it, if you can. If you can't review it, then just give me a link, or get me the document, and I will review it.)
However, I've been able to locate the second one. My evaluation/assessment of the second one is as follows:
In 1988 a registered dietician (RD), Phillis Crapo, wrote scholarly review of many-many articles titled, "Use of alternative sweeteners in diabetic diet". In her review she made the following statement (that WebMD probably refers to):
QUOTE: However, chronic intake of xylitol in animals has been shown to be associated with tumor induction and other pathology. END OF QUOTE.
However, she didn't support her statement by any evidence. Therefore her statement is just an unsubstantiated, questionable opinion that has little or no value.
In other words, in the first paragraph on page 177 (where she talked about tumors and xylitol) she should've referred to one of the referenced articles. But no, she failed to do so.
Additionally -- unless "chronic", "animals", "other pathology" and the rate and duration of feeding are defined -- her statement is also pretty vague.
Therefore, this text, the text that WebMD refers to, is just a vague, non-specific, questionable opinion NOT supported by any evidence.
Judge it for yourself. Her article can be found at http://care.diabetesjournals.org/content/11/2/174.full.pdf
I hope this helps.
