Your explanation here provides much better context for understanding your situation! It sounds like they probably recommend around the 12.5mg daily dose. If you read Dr. Brownstein's work, he often prescribes his patients 50mg. There are many people who take triple digit doses, myself included, who find the higher doses suit us better. It is all about personal experimentation and finding what works best for you. The point I'm trying to make is many people take lots more, it just depends on your subjective response.
In addition to the Iodine FAQ and RRR/RR/R links, Brownstein has some good papers, and his book (Iodine: Why You Need It) was really informative about the Science behind iodine. Any fear I had of Iodine was from lack of understanding (and as I have come to learn, probably the fear propaganda around iodine), so I did read quite a bit. I'm also a bit of a nerd and enjoy the Science :)
If you are invested in your health (which it seems you are to commit to Gerson, that's a regimen!), you should seriously consider Iodine for longer than a few months.
