I would add that the man, who unfortunately died, did the worst Sugar intake to break the fast - pop is very very acid ... so it aggravated the acidosis part. Ketoacidosis is usually referred to when a diabetic can't utilize the glucose and it peaks, his body starts to break the fat (from which a ketosis is generated) and none of that helps his deep acidosis.
I happened to measure recently the pH of Sea Salt solution, 1 tsp per liter, ... wait for it ... : it was 9.5 !!!
So a potentially effective rescue in such dire circumstances could be a pinch of unprocessed salt in your water, or more than a pinch if the body signals relief after taking it.
