Confused about Brownstein's statement

He states 95% of the population is Iodine deficient. where is he coming up with this figure and if Iodine deficiency has not been previously evaluated much, then he is clearly basing this on the patients he sees and making an unsubstantiated statement about the general population. Also in a few interviews he stated 95% of his PATIENTS are Iodine deficient. something is not adding up. Can anyone please explain?
