Whatever you do, do not peel the skin off. If some of the skin is curling up then use a sterilized nail clipper or a cuticle cutter to remove the loose skin but never peel. You can use rubbing alcohol to sterilize them, but then allow it at least a minute to dry.

When you peel the skin off it causes trauma to the underlying membranal mucosa and the trauma then sparks inflammation.

Trauma to mucous membranes is highly damaging to them.
