Psyllium can certainly be used as a short term solution but the problem with fiber-based supplements is that they cause dependence and destroy intestinal bacteria.
So use it sparingly and wisely. Fiber can certainly provide relief, short-term, but will cause lots of problems long term. Better to be sure that you are getting fiber in the form of fruits and vegetables on a daily basis. No "extra" fiber beyond that. Just say no to bran anything :)
