Another Prozac Nightmare - More Lives Destroyed

Another Prozac Nightmare - More Lives Destroyed
From Vinrock
4-28-4

Here are copies of, and links to, two letters a friend of mine had written from prison. When I was 16 years old, and he was 18, he'd been prescribed Prozac and was sent to live with his father. It was night and day obvious that something was wrong with Kurt, and it eventually became obvious that the sudden change of character was directly related to the drugs he was being prescribed. His treatment unfortunately came to an end when he killed his father later that year; having been incarcerated ever since. I had been diagnosed as "ADHD" when I was a child and was drugged up with Ritalin for a good while; I can vividly remember how it turned me into a zombie.

This guy is a good person, when most of the people around were troublemakers, he was one of the few honestly good people who just looked for a good time and avoided trouble. It's easy to blow someone like this off, I know him personally and he got dealt a bad hand at an early age.

I am so sorry to hear your son's story. I am sorry I cannot contribute to his memorial fund financially, but I send you my support and prayers. (See the ICFDA Survivor Story "He Never Said Goodbye.")

I am sure you are wondering why me, a convicted murderer, is writing. Your son and I have something in common. I was placed on Prozac in 1996 for depression. I was 18 and naïve. About three weeks into "treatment," I became irrational. Paranoid, and violent. This was very out-of-character for me. In a week's time, I slapped my girlfriend, beat up a friend, and purposefully crashed my truck into a stone wall. Now most people would notice they were behaving abnormally, but on Prozac, you think that you are rational, even at irrational times.

That is the best way I can explain it. I finally went over the edge on April 25th, 1996. I walked 13 miles to my father's home in a trance-like state. I was very calm, but it was as if I was watching myself from outside.

At my father's home, I visited with my father for a while, and in the middle of the visit while he bent over to pick something up, I shot and killed him. There was no reason for harming him. I loved my father very much. To this day, I can't say exactly what I was thinking at that moment.

After the shooting, I turned myself in to police where I calmly confessed to the shooting. I knew now that my behavior was out of control. I told the police that the meds I was on had been making me act weird, but they didn't want to hear my "excuses."

Even at court, my attorney said he could find no evidence to show Prozac caused violence. The makers of Prozac even offered to aid the prosecution's case against me. Protecting their drug al all costs.

To avoid the death penalty, I pleaded guilty to Murder Three. I am serving 22 1/2 to 60 years in a maximum security prison. I am surrounded by murderers, rapists, and worse every day. All I wanted was help. The doctor said Prozac would make me happy. I'm not happy.

Cases like your son's and mine are not as rare as people think. I pray someday, we will find the justice we deserve and the truth will be told. I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

God bless you.

I am writing to you and other organizations which realize the dangers associated with psychiatric drugs, in hopes of receiving your aid and support. Sadly, in April of 1996, while experiencing a violent reaction to the drug PROZAC I shot and killed my father. There was no reason for the shooting. I loved my father very much and I have no history of violence prior to taking PROZAC or since.

At the time there was insufficient evidence to prove my violence was caused by PROZAC. Eli Lilly and Co., the manufacturers of PROZAC, even offered to assist the prosecution by supplying expert testimony by their own doctors. Because of the insufficient evidence and to avoid the death penalty I plead guilty to third degree murder. I received 22 to 60 years. I was 18 at the time.

I am now 24 years old and have spent the last 4 years of my incarceration researching PROZAC. I have found many studies and cases which prove that PROZAC & similar antidepressants (Zoloft, Luvox & Paxil) can cause violence in people. I am now appealing my criminal case and in the process of bringing suit against ELI LILLY and CO. I hope to force Eli Lilly to recognize their role in the death of my father. A similar case was brought against SMITHKLINE PHARMACEUTICALS and their drug PAXIL in Wyoming (00-CV-25-Bea). In that case it was proven that Paxil caused a man to kill his wife, daughter in law and granddaughter before
taking his own life. This forced Paxil to acknowledge the risk of violence and suicide on their warning labels.

I currently have an attorney interested in representing me, however in order for him to do so he will need to travel from his office in Illinois to me in Pennsylvania to speak to me in person to go over my case in great detail. In order for this meeting to take place I will need to cover his traveling expenses which are estimated at $1,000 to $1,500. I only earn 19 cents an hour at my prison job so I have started a Legal Aid Fund to cover this cost. I am asking for contributions, no amount is too small.

All funds can be sent directly to Attorney Michael T. Smith. There is an opportunity here to help me and my attorney to stop Eli Lilly & Co. from deceiving the public and to hold them accountable for the dangerous side-effects which they refuse to acknowledge. I don't want another person to have to go through the pain I live with everyday knowing I took my father's life. While there is no way I can get my father back, I can try to stop this tragedy from happening again. I pray you can find it in your heart to help this cause. My case may help save lives. All contributions can be sent to

MICHAEL T. SMITH,
843 W. WISE ROAD
SCHAUMBERG, ILLINOIS 60193.

Or you can contact him at: (847-895-0626).

Thank you for your time and consideration and God Bless You.

ANY CONTRIBUTORS WILL BE KEPT UP TO DATE ABOUT MY CASE.

Sincerely,
Kurt Danysh
