Try swedish bitters and gentian bitters. Those work well to get your stomach fired up if you drink 1 or 2 tsp 20 mins before big meals. They definitely helped me out.
The theory is something about bitters stimulating the vagus nerve, which then stimulates the liver and stomach to get firing. Better than hcl because it uses your own body instead of an outside source. For those of us with sluggish digestion we need all the help we can get.
