First time I took it, it reminded me of something from my childhood past. Took me ages to remember, and I finally did:
A product called TCP. I don't know if this is known outside the UK, but here, it was a standby for sore throats and similar, to gargle with.
Terrible taste, but you felt it was "doing you good".
So I got to wondering whether it had contained iodine.
Went to look for a bottle in a shop to see what the ingredients were. I think the relevant one was "halogenated phenols" (or halogenated something).
Whether that includes Iodine now, who knows, but I wonder if it did, back in the day, before Iodophobia took hold.
I don't love the taste, but I don't hate it either.
I recently discovered that adding some Lugols to a solution of L-ascorbic acid made the Iodine reduce to iodide, and it became a clear solution, tasting only of the ascorbic acid, and no taste of iodine.
The downside of course is that you don't get the benefit of elemental iodine. This may actually be ok for some people, I guess.
