"From our results it is assumed that AgNPs used in this study do not penetrate the cell, but instead release silver ions that infiltrate into the cell leading to the formation of NPs through reduction by organic compounds present in the cell wall and cytoplasm."

so nanoparticles are not the killers themselves, but they transport and release the silver ions into the cells.

Seems to me that the nanoparticles have more chance of transporting the ions into the cell than the ions by itself like in Ionic Silver.
