Back injury/leg numbness

About 2 months ago I injured my lower back (left side) through exercise (I believe). I think I may have had a pinched nerve based on my symptoms, but it healed after a couple of weeks.
I just started having the same pain, in the same area a few days ago. The pain is so bad it keeps me from sleeping and this time it radiates into my hip as well as my groin area. I have only been using a TENS unit to help and two mornings ago I woke to find my upper left thigh numb. It is still numb now, 2 days later, along with the feeling of mild "fuzziness" in my ankle as well as the feeling that I'm somehow retaining water in this same leg..I know that all sounds crazy, but I know I'm not imagining it.
I haven't been to a dr because I don't want to be told my options are either medication or a cortisone shot so I thought I'd ask your opinion instead.
Thank you for any ideas/input you may have!
