Re: Poke Berry

I dug up a poke berry plant about 25+ years ago--I had to use a back hoe to dig it. The root was a little larger than a football and almost as hard as wood----I had to use a hatchet to chop the root and even then it was tough stuff.

They are VERY hard to kill---you can spray the top plant an it will survive and come up next year-----very tuff plant.

The OLD plants can get 8+ feet tall and just covered in berries.........

AS A GENERAL RULE------mothers warned the children in America for the past 200+ years, to not eat red berries from trees and bushes and herbs----just out of "SAFETY" reasons---because think of it------BACK when you were barefoot, living in the woods---BEARS, WOLVES and NATIVES out to KILLM YOU 24/7........you were always hungry and kids seeing berries on herbs/bushes and trees surely looked yummy.

MANY strong herbs have faded out of the herb books........

People use to eat the POKE PLANT spring leaves, because once this plant exist, you knew each spring where it grows----YOU WERE SO HUNGRY each spring----early green anything could save your life and the POKE BERRY PLANT surely has that history.
