There are endless breeds of bluegill (panfish), natural varieties and hybrids.... normally hybrids are suggested to be sterile.
The more natural northern pond bluegill can take 5+ years to mature. While hybrids tend to grow fast and can cost $1 each as a baby. Hybrids tend to eat allot.
The bluegills I obtained last spring,I am not sure where they originated from. The neighbor thinks he caught them from a friends pond and that they are "hybrids"; but they lay eggs like crazy all summer long and babies literally having babies--I have never seen anything like them before. The theory that hybrids are sterile does not apply, but they do eat and eat.......so much so, that the ponds still have some ice on them and these bluegills are already eating surface fish food.........while no other fish would think of this in such ice cold water. A normal fish is sluggish in the winter months--unless they are a cold water species, which are also normally a high oxygen species of trout / salmon.
Eating in cool / cold water gives them a great advantage, because the smaller species, such as bluegill, are food for all the large predator fish......so the majority of small fish are always eaten before maturity -----but these bluegills can lay eggs the same summer they were born---which is something I never knew could happen.
AS A HUMAN "Meat" Food Source, a fresh water food source that grow easy in small ponds or even plastic tanks----the hybrid? variety that is not sterile could feed the world...... and they grow large (for a bluegill) in just 1 year. If they were grown in a warm weather state, they would grow double in size. Warm states like Texas, California bluegills can grow 5x larger than up North.
Bluegills are one of the better tasting fresh water species and yet, they have "NO" market value.
just 1 pair of this type of bluegills --could have many many thousands of survivable babies in just 1 year and each grow 1#. A great food source for fish are bugs---putting bug lights over the water feeds the fish all night long. FISH, eat FISH, so often commercial fish food is made from the fish processing --so fish food is made from fish, because that is what fish likes---other fish.
Fish is a much more natural meat source that cows / pigs / sheep / goats, and all cloved animals are......mammals are not a natural human food source at all, but humans adapt to eating everything once they were told it is not acceptable to eat your neighbors---because just like fish, when wild, humans prefer to eat their neighbors.
