Drinkers versus Alkies in the Family

My husband's sons have such strange ways of experiencing their weekends: it seems mandatory that they buy "a twelve pack" on Saturday. Around noon they start in drinking. They work, repair stuff, change diapers and even eat meals while they're drinking .
After dinner, out comes a beer. But I see no signs of intoxication, no silliness, no depression. No smoking. Smiles.
My daughter's boyfriend is at the other end of the spectrum.
He gets falling drunk almost each night after work. She tries to ignore it, going upstairs to watch tv. He'll be dropping things, smoking like a train, sometimes falling over. Next morning he's back to work on time, quite irritable, smoking all day long. Coughing all night. Comes home, hits the beer and/or the bar.
Now, to compare the two examples I see the boyfriend as having Major Problems with his life. Two divorces, kids across the country he never sees, estranged from his father, struggling to make ends meet. The brothers, in contrast, have lots of money,
great jobs they love, incredible wives, adorable kids who love them. New homes, new cars, Christian wives who are great moms.
So. Is alcoholism a disease of the spirit? I think so.
