I'm a guy, and I never expected nor really wanted anything for valentines day. Really, it's a holiday for the ladies - if the woman and man exchange gifts the whole "flowers for the girl" loses something. I don't mind receiving a card but the typical gifts like flowers and chocolates should be kept for the ladies IMO.
Honestly, with all the holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, anniversaries, ad nauseum... it's nice to just get the girl the box o' chocolates and flowers. Too much giving, money, and hassle spoils what could be a romantic day that is supposed to be about you and him - not the gifts. A good alternative might be to *do* something instead of buying him something. Maybe eat dinner by the water or pack a picnic for the park... take a drive out to somewhere... cook him dinner... memories are better if they aren't about material objects.
