I was on birth control for a number of years also. The main differences I saw when I stopped were that my periods began to get longer, more normal. They were shorter than usual with the birth control pills.
And yes, I became moodier. But I began to eat tofu and that helped with the mood issue. From what I have read, the tofu does have plant estrogens, but it counteracts extra estrogen, and helps produce progesterone, balancing out everything. If tofu is not for you, maybe something else might help. Many women use progesterone cream; I personally have not tried it.
