Re: Yes, fecal matter is everywhere
You are absolutely right about toothbrushes, a recent study revealed that all toothbrushes in all the bathrooms tested had some fecal matter on them. (not just toothbrushes, but all surfaces including taps, mirrors, soaps, etc). Even 20/20 did a story on this some time back.
Not only is some of the fecal bacteria airborne, but flushing propels particles and germs at really high speeds, and therefore far distances.
So basically, every time you flush, you're spraying the entire room with nasty stuff. If you notice closely when you flush, the water does spray, although it's more fine-mist like. Which is why I hate standing next to the toilet when flushing. I flush and run :)
I also keep my toothbrush in my bedroom (been doing it couple of years). Paranoid yes, but once you have the knowledge it's just too icky to contemplate ever going back. I know I can probably get more fecal germs shaking someone's hand, but why would you want to put the toothbrush in your mouth when you KNOW there's fecal stuff on it?
