Yes modern chemistry is based on water solubility, and lack of biomass to keep it upstream. But the new chemicals that specifically stop microbe/virus activity I think are having the greater impact. The very life of this planet depends on microbes.
The plants get their nutrients from the microbes-its the microbes that dissolve soil.
The only things to return the elements the to soil that off gas at the surface-is microbes. Our bodies are universes of microbes unto themself NOT an I-a WE.
