What exactly should I see while making CS?

I am sorry to seem dense! I know to try to keep everything scrupulously clean and rinse with DW. I just can't seem to find an explicit description of what to look for.

In Trapper's instructions, it says a cloud will form. Is this visible to the naked eye, or only with the laser? And what color should it be?
