there could be decay there if the enamel was damaged when she removed the amalgam.  it could also be a stain.  mercury and the metals in it, oxidize and stain teeth.  it is not uncommon to replace mercury fillings and have the white fillings have a grayish hue to them due to the stains caused by years of having the amalgam.  if you were to take a chunk of steel and sit it outside on a painted white surface, you would see permanent staining over the years.  it is the same environment in your mouth, oxygen and electrolytes.  the metals in the amalgam galvanize, oxidize and pit.
