I just had mine removed today!! The nurse I spoke to last week acted like it would be "very uncomfortable" if I had it taken out when I wasn't on my period. However, I decided that was a chance I would take after finding this forum. Who has a regular period anyway with this thing? I lied and said I was spotting and got an appointment for removal this morning. It didn't feel any different than the little twinge you feel when you get your pap smear. He uses the speculum and I think he grabbed it with forceps. (Hard to see what's going on down there!) I don't know about trying it yourself, but I can't see why any old doctor couldn't do it for you. It doesn't seem to be any more involved than a normal pelvic exam. Good luck!
Also, my doc didn't seem to completely write off my symptoms but I could tell he was skeptical that the low dose of hormone in mirena could be causing my side effects. I told him I would be back for a full medical work-up if this doesn't improve my weight gain, bloating, irritability, constant appetite, lethargy, etc. because I know my body and this is not right. If it's not the Mirena(which I am convinced it is) then something is medically wrong with me.
I'm hoping that today is the start of getting back to normal!!!
