You said it right there: lyme disease. This is a clue, because this agent must play by the rules of thermodynamics. It must exist within a closed system, which is fed, and excretes waste. This places it in the quintessential catagory of parasite. I will be willing to bet, that any exodermic parasite could vector these things.
