I hope you were able to get an earlier appointment. I don't want to cause any undue worry, but I received an email just yesterday from a friend who has the Mirena IUD and her news wasn't good. This friend is a nurse and she is the one who convinced me to get Mirena. That was almost 5 years ago. We both stopped getting our periods within 3 months of insertion. Otherwise, nothing much to report in terms of side effects. That all changed about 4 months ago for my friend when she suddenly started getting periods again. She figured it was just the progestin having worn off and it was time to get the IUD replaced. Being too busy, she did nothing about it at the time. A month ago, she heard about a woman at work who has the Mirena IUD and went to have it removed only to discover it could not be found. After ultrasounds, etc., it was found: it had pierced her abdominal wall. She had to have surgery to have it removed. Well, I figured this was a fluke, but the email I received yesterday from my nurse friend was to tell me that she went to her doctor yesterday to have the IUD removed and they couldn't find it. She's scheduled for an ultrasound and laparoscopy later this week. I truly hope this is not your situation, but feel free to use this story to get your doctor to see you ASAP.
