Is revenge ever acceptable?

Please keep church and state (religion and police) out of this thread. I'm not advocating illegal activities and I am already aware of religion.

I don't think forgiveness is possible or appropriate for all situations. At the other extreme is revenge, which isn't a positive thing but might be considered an evil necessity in some cases. Some are stuck in "limbo" where they can't forgive, but they feel helpless and victimized. They can't escape the harm they suffered and end up acting out against others because they weren't able to act out against the person who harmed them. We see it all the time - bitter people who snap and hurt others because an individual at one point really messed them up. So instead of striking out at others, why not strike out at the person who caused the problem in the first place? Is revenge ever acceptable?
