I did a physician supervised 21 day fast and blood work was done once a week. My physician was monitoring my glucose (I was hypoglycemic and fasting corrected the condition), liver, kidneys, electrolytes and blood pressure. All my stats were stable during the entire 21 day fast. I think the need for a physician was to help me prep for the fast. He help me taper off all the meat and processed foods I ate. The week before my fast, I was fasting intermittently and was only eating raw fruits and vegetables. He also took me off all my medications. It took me about 4-6 weeks to wean me off my meds. I was taking hormone
(I am female and had both ovaries removed), thyroid medication, Creon (for chronic pancreatitis), Pepcid (for acid reflux) and antidepressants. I found that getting off all these meds to be more challenging than the fast. Also, the physician assisted me in reintroducing foods, which was very challenging to me. Personally I found the fast to be wonderfully uneventful with an overwhelming sense of calm that came over me by day 5. My body thoroughly enjoyed taking an extended break from the digestion process and I enjoyed not worrying about what to eat or what NOT to eat. I rested often but still managed to work ( I have a desk job) with a great deal more alertness and productivity. I felt weak but not fatigued and occasionally lightheaded. I also had access to alkaline water. Perhaps the minerals in the Alkaline Water kept me stable? If I were to fast again, I think I could do it without the assistance of my physician. I think anyone with a significant condition (ie Diabetes, Epilepsy, compromised immune disorders) should seek a physician's assistance when fasting.
