Hi Jay, I live where the trees grow tall and mighty. I make it my business to pick them up as soon as they drop from the tree in late summer. They are still green when they fall. I wash them, dry them and place them in a zip-lock freezer bag. They keep indefinately in that way.

I hope you live where the trees a plentiful. If you are not sure, ask around.
