I know that is a weird question to ask but I have had my mirena for almost two years and after reading all the sumptoms that women have posted it has made me understand what I have been experiencing. I have a low sex drive, mood swings, and I just don't feel right. A year ago I got a yeast infection and went to the Dr. SInce then I have had it three times. I asked my doctor if it was related to the mirena and she kept telling me no. MoreThis is a reply to # 1,062,263I say yes. I suffered with recurring yeast infections when I had the Mirena. I also suffered with yeast infections when I was on the progestin only pill. I haven't seen many women post yeast infections as a side effect. I never suffered with yeast infections like I have since I've been using Progestin only hormones. Get a good probiotic to help you with the yeast infections. Mine actually became a systemic problem (candidiasis). A easy way to tell if you have candida is to get a clear glass of water, fill it up and spit into it. If strings form from your saliva, you probably have candida. Google it Good Luck

This is a reply to # 1,062,375It kinda took a while for me to put 2 and 2 together that it was the hormones causing the yeast infections. I had my doctor to write a prescription with multiple refills for diflucan. You may have noticed that over the counter medications are not strong enough. Please don't let it become systemic which is very difficult to fight. Do the saliva test that will help you to figure out your next plan of action. Definitely go to the health food store and get a good Probiotic(Acidophilus) Google it. This will help increase the good bacteria in your system which will help battle the yeast. I've learned with the hormones, it becomes a vicious cycle. I started having yeast infections without itching. I would just curd up with the discharge. I've tried everything to get it under control. Finally, I had the IUD removed. I was having other issues too-Acne, severe weight gain, mood swings, etc...Its been out two weeks. Bomber, I wanted to keep because it helped with bleeding symptoms of my fibroids. Keep me posted. Good Luck!

I am just like you, I have the yeast infections without the itching. it curds up with discharge. Ahhh yuck! OKay so you had your IUD taken out 3 weeks ago? HOw do things feel? This is a reply to # 1,063,135I'm still suffering with mild symptoms. I'm still moody and slightly depressed. I know my emotional issues are hormonal because there is nothing to be doom and gloom about. Still having some Acne issues. The Acne was unbearable with the Mirena...a new cystic pimple everyday. I'm 31 but have zits like I'm 15. I've only developed two pimples since removal vs pimples every other day.
I hoped that I would get instant relief after removal. It's going to take some time for our body to sort itself out.
I had a period with some clotting after removal that lasted about a week. I'm still spotting though.
As for the yeast, I got an infection shortly after removal. I'm still having some discharge with a metallic smell. Though it's not as bad as when I had the Mirena...my vagina stayed a mucosal pit.
Pink, have you noticed a metallic smelling discharge????? That has been the most bizarre. I have never had this problem ever.
I wouldn't even know I was curding sometimes until I had sex. I know this is TMI, but my boyfriend would ask what is the cottage cheese discharge. Talk about embarrassing and trying to explain that it's not harmful to him OR a STD. None of the doctors (naturopath and MD) understand or have been able to provide long term relief. No one has tried to figure out why this is happening. I've been given herbs and diflucan and have used plenty Monistat. I'm still battling to reclaim a healthy vagina.
Try Rephresh. It seems to help. It restores a balanced ph to the vagina making it harder for yeast and other infections to thrive.
I'm trying a new Probiotic by a company called Source of Life and the name of the product is Primal Defense and will use the Rephresh every three days. I'll keep you posted. This is a reply to # 1,063,468I am really encouraged by you. So, its been two days and I can't even tell you how 'moody' I am. Its not that I just fly off the handle, but everything that my husband does just gets under my skin :) Anyway, I have a period (the first time in a year) and I DO have that metallic(b/c it doesn't smell like cheese or normal vagina smell...huh?) smell. I can't stand it. I am going to a herb place, that we have in town, that does muscle testing, so she will know what kind of herbs my body will need to heal and rebalance. I know my body is super sensitive to anything that I ingest or put on it. maybe the yeast infections is just my body trying to tell me that the harmones in the IUD aren't good for me.
Ha, Oh no. Its SOOOO embarasing when the 'significant other' finds out. Ahhh *exhale*, its not like you can hid it. I just got married 5 months ago and my husband told me after the honeymoon (thank goodness) that I have an odor. I about died!

I got the Mirena 4/16/06 and got it removed 11/29/07. My last real period was July 2007.
I have been miserable-not even realizing it was because of Mirena-you know cause all of docs say it ONLY has a local effect, yeah right.
I've battled with the vaginal odor thing too-bacterial vaginosis-fish smell. Had a standing prescription for Metro Gel to help with that.
Update-The Rephresh has helped somewhat. Though I had a short period where I curded out of control after insertion, it was like yeast die off effect. If I don't get better. I'm going to have to go to my primary care and demand something stronger. I believe the yeast gets immune to routine anti-fungals. I've heard Nystatin is suppose to be very good for killing yeast. I'm going to research it some more.
I'm so frustrated. I can't hardly remember my life before the recurring yeast infections, disfiguring acne, obscene weight gain, migraines, curding vagina and bouts with depression. LOL-I summed that up!
I can't figure out the metallic smell though. I've searched high and low with no success. My Naturopath thinks that it was something metallic in the Mirena. I don't know-why am I still smelling it though it's not as strong when I had the Mirena. I've had it out for 17 days.
Soooo Did you do the saliva test? I haven't did it recently cause I know i'll have strings. It'll just piss me off. Do you have any children? Are you still smelling the metallic smell since removal. When was your last yeast infections. Did you experience any heart palpitations after removal? What does your doc say about the recurring vaginal infections?

I don't have any children and I am 24. This is what you need to do. get a Bifidophilous(its stronger than acidophilous) and also get a oregon grape extract. Get these things from a good provider, I would suggest Nature Sunshine. YOu can go online and find them if you don't have them locally. THe last time I responded to you I went and bought these two things and have been taking them religiously. I am almost smell free. Yes I did the saliva test...and yes it was stringy. My last yeast infection is right now. I have had the Mirena for two years and I had no clue what was causing my problems until I found this website. I have not had palpitations, thank goodness but I had them soooo bad. I asked my doc and she said that I needed to watch what I was eating. YEAH RIGHT. DOn't ask them, they don't know. Get those two things I told you to from a good distributor and you will notice a difference. Keep me posted!

This is a reply to # 1,553,424I am finding this YEARS later, but I too am suffering from this. I have tried EVERYTHING and been to the doctor FOUR times in the last FIVE months of chronic yeast infections. They've tested me for STD's 3 times, and all they can find is mild yeast. They can't find my IUD and recently I've started bleeding for two weeks straight after having almost no period for two years....
Does my doctor seem concerned....NO.
I've tried acidopholis (daily), diflucan (3x), monistat (4x), cleanses, yeast killers, changing my diet, douches, boric acid, EVERYTHING!!!!!!
The only thing I can think of is that the IUD is creating some sort of permanent infection up there because I've done everything suggested by a. my doctor, and b. the internet to end this nightmare. I've even had every f_ing color of the rainbow except blue and purple come out of there - negative for STD's mind you - and TWO doctor's are baffled. One day blood, green, yellow, and white discharge all came out.
I am not now sexually active. Nor can I be with rainbow brite vagina.

This is a reply to # 1,890,355I have been on the Mirena for about 2 years now, i have had a reoccurring yeast infection and also a few cases of Bacterial vaginosis. Most of the time i strictly have yeast infections. I have been told that i have low acidity, also have been checked for any STD by swabs and blood work. I have not been checked for diabetes yet. I have always had a yeast infection here and there, but not all the time, not like this.
My Doctor doesn't care in the slightest that I'm suffering. She reminds me not to wash with soap and sends me off with a pill. I get a infection MONTHLY. i use the over the counter Monistat as much as i can, hoping the yeast doesn't become resistant to me using it all the time. I eat yogurt when i can, but i don't take the probiotic pills, that's next on my list along with an ACV bath.
I didn't have this problem prior to having an IUD, but my doctor swears that my IUD has nothing to do with my infection. I tell her that i find information online with others relating to issues i have, she says everyone is wrong. My doctor doesn't understand because she is not the one having to suffer the discomfort, discharge, pain during sex, nothing. I feel like I'm wasting her time every time i go in for help.
I've asked her to put me on a more aggressive treatment. I was given 3 diflucan to take every three days. Its been about 2 weeks and my infection came back even worse than before. I would get discharge without having an itch, now that its back I've got it all; irritation, itching, redness, discharge.
If there is a way to Keep my IUD and take the probiotic pills, eat the yogurt, and have a ACV bath every so often to keep my PH balanced it would be WONDERFUL.
If i cant find that balance I'll have to make the decision of switching birth control or even tubal Ligation. I wouldn't mind the Tubal Ligation at all i have two children already and don't want any more, I just don't want to have a period and i like that my IUD does that for me.
It also helps level me out as far as Migraine headaches.
I've had other doctors Prescribe me Boric Acid suppositories that seemed to give me enough acid to keep the yeast at bay. But again my doctor warns against it and rather me just take Diflucan. Shoot my doctor even says dont waste my time or money buying Probiotic Pills. But there has to be something we can do to get under control.

This is a reply to # 2,111,903OMGOODNESS! Yes!I've been having this issue too.this is the second time in two years that ive had this yeast like discharge. I've also had jelly like discharge that is the color of an egg yolk. Ive had a ton of tests done including yeast tests that come up negative. I know this is not normal. I've never had any trouble with dryness and yeast infections. It doesn't itch or smell, its just there! I'm definitely going to have my IUD removed. I cant deal with this! I'm so glad that I'm not the only one. This has certainly been helpful reading all of the comments.

I was going to get a full meta panel to check for diabetes and then another pap to check for STD's. And looking at my hubby like he did something wrong. I felt it was the mirena, but I wasn't sure. I looked up other BC methods and they all state that they may cause yeast infections. Like you guys I was told that I wouldn't have the same issues as the other BC methods.
You are a God send. The one time I was cured was when i was taking acidophilus.

I've been giving medication, changed my diet , monitoring my Sugar intake, nothing seems to WORK!! I figure it has to be this MIRENA !!! I am getting this out of me this month and I can't wait! This thing has destroyed my life. Crazy mood swings , depressed, cystitis acne, low sex drive , and yeast infections with intense itching and soreness ! I look forward to having this removed !!

This is a reply to # 1,062,263I'm not sure how old this post is but I had to register and share my story with everyone I have been reading threads about the awful mirena IUD I am 24 yrs old and I have had the Mirena for going on 5 years I am taking this thing out and could be happier I wish I wouldn've read all these post a lot sooner but at least I did before opting for another 5 years of hell! I had irregular bleeding when I first had the Mirena put in I was told I shouldn't take BC with Estrogen due to my family Cancer history I didn't know much about it prior to getting it put in all I knew was I was young and would always forget to take the pill. After 3 years I had normal paps and on the 4th yr that's when my life changed, i had an abnormal pap for the first time & was told i had nothing to worry about that 9 times out of 10 it's nothing serious so she suggested a biopsy just to be sure & I was never called with results, now I myself have worked in the medical field and knowing that if you have a bad diagnosis you call the patient immediately I thought to myself well no news is good news right? WRONG! I figured jus to be safe I would call to confirm my theory and I was diagnosed with moderate dysplasia otherwise known as precancerous cells on the cervix!! OVER THE PHONE WHILE AT WORK!! She then proceeded to tell my I needed surgery a LEEP procedure done ASAP & I was to go in Thursday which was 2 days after! I was shocked I was sooo scared there's no words to express how one feels finding out that I could possibly have cancer & no one cared to call me! I immediately switched OB doctors & after I am happy to say that 6 months later I am cancer free BUT I go more frequently for Paps then usual which is fine with me. Now the main reason I found this forum was due to reoccurring yeast infections no matter what I do I'm a clean person shower 1-2 times daily and still could not get rid of them I have also since mirena had a drop in my sex drive & over all just never feel "right"! Had I known this was the cause I would've gotten rid of this thing years ago! Please do not let the same thing happen to you!!

Here's a description of mine: I am 25, I got my Mirena at 23 in hopes of keeping it until 28. After a while, I started experiencing unusually frequent itching-I was very active and thought it was just irritation. Not knowing what it was, I told my doctor during my recent pap i was itchy. Come to realize I had been suffering with yeast infections without knowing what they were. Since my last diagnosis four months ago I have another one. Unacceptable. I hadn't had intercourse. I don't understand.

This is a reply to # 1,062,263yes your mirena is giving this yeast infection, my wife had it the mirena for 2 years and suffer with yeast infection from about a week after putting it in, which she never got a yeast infection before. She had it remove because of weight gain and the yeast infection went away with it. She ask her doctor on numerous occasions and she said no it had nothing to do with it, but we are convince it did because of the result 2 months after removing it.

This is a reply to # 1,062,263Look into actinomycoses, or actinomycosis. Have your doctor specifically culture for that. It Is a bacteria specific to iuds that cause yeast to overgrow and is that's why it's missed.
My doctor gave me clindamycin cream to treat it.
