I've had a problem with dry, peeling lips for the past 5 years. I've never had problems with my lips or any skin problems for that matter before. Well, about 5 years ago, I was smoking weed when I noticed that my lips were very chapped and peeling. Thats when I started using chapstick. However, since then, my lips never healed and returned to its "normal" state. My lips are always dry and they dry up quickly. Say for instance, I wash my lips. At that instant, my lips might appear to be fine, however, 1-2 hrs later, my lips will have dried up and start to get crusty.
I've tried everything from prescribed creams, ointments, chapsticks, balms, vitamin creams, oils, etc etc
Currently, I break up a vitamin E capsule at night and then apply it on my lips. Then in the morning, I try to clean my lips so to speak and then apply crisco which keeps my lips presentable for and hr or so. Then I have to wash my lips and either apply more crisco or apply some african shea butter so I can exfoliate the lip skin later on during the day.
The problem seems like my lip is unable to moisturize itself. It simply just drys up. My lips will dry up, either crack or get "hard" and then peel. The dried up skin also turns white when in contact with water. It seems to be worst on my bottom lip and on the middle bottom of my upper lip.
Currently, Im trying to order your book and I want to try liver cleansing.
I no longer drink alcohol, smoke or do drugs. I drink plenty of water and I exercise at least couple times a week by running.
This lip problem has taken my "life" away from me. I just want it back.

The problem is not really in the skin of your lips, but reflects an inflammatory condition in the colon, parts of the small intestines and some in the stomach. The inner skin that enfolds the GI tract is irritated and may have developed small lesions. Drugs do that, and certain foods and beverages do that as well. Since then, Ive used the colosan(2 bottles) and really tried to change my diet to my body type(vata). I see an overall improvement about 30%. I say 20% because although I noticed that my lip skins peels much slower, it STILL gets dry and eventually peels. Also, it gets white when in contact with water. I'm currently applying east african shea butter throughout the day and night and sometimes even crisco. I find your book to be AMAZING, and I have not yet finished it because of my current busy schedule but Im really trying to focus on the recommended diet for my body type and Im also trying really hard to not eat dinner beyond 7pm. I'm also applying borage oil on my forearms and stomach before I go to sleep. Someone with a similar problem to mine did this for couple days and his lips were HEALED(he had this problem for 5+ yrs too). However, it seems like its not working for me.
Andreas, I am currently ordering more colosan and Im trying harder to be more discipline in my diet. In the meantime, what would you recommend that I apply on my lips during the day and night to keep it from getting hard and dry. Out of everything that Ive tried, it seems like the eastern african shea butter is working the best.
I still have hope in your "treatment" and I just wanted to ask you if you could give me some advice on what to do.........

I would stay with the African shea butter, if that works for you. There is no other reason for dry lips than digestive trouble. Liver Cleansing is the way to break into the vicious cycle, and along with colon cleansing and a more alkaline-forming diet it should completely restore normal lip skin.

Andreas's message to you is spot on!
I had nasty, dry peeling lips for many years .. so cracked that they would bleed when I smiled! After my first liver flush, my lips literally shed a thick layer of skin (I felt like a smake) and underneath, suddenly I had gorgeous, smooth and pink lips - all plump and moist! I never need to wear lip salve now.
My lips have not been cracked since .. occasioanlly when I have had a few days of eating junk tyoe foods, i can see my lips getting dry .. but Liver Flushing and changing eating habits have ensured I never have that condition again.

This is a reply to # 376,183I just can't believe that!, it seems that everybody on here who has the really bad lips got them becuase our lips got chapped and then used chapstick or some kind of cream on them which has made them worse!. If this problem was our digestion then why did our lips not peel earlier? it's a bit of a coincidence that we all got bad lips after useing chapstic/cream - surely the asnwer is in there!
I stopped drinking and smoking for 4 months and ate healthy and it made sod all difference to my lips!
I now get hammered and smoke 20 fags a night when I want and if I'm pissed it has no bearing on my lips nor if I spend a whole week eating kfc or processed foods!
The only way my lips have improved is by leaving them alone and over time - : we are talking months to years here they begin to peel back slower!
Has Dr Andreas seen a case like ours and completely cured it!, I bet the answer is no!

i even tried eating meat to see if the nutrients will help but that cleanseing stuff sounds like an infomercials you see on tv usually a white guy with a big goofy smile telling you how great there product works. i want to see at least ancedotal evidencethat that works

This is a reply to # 376,186I've had this peeling lip problem since I was a kid. I agree with the guy who said that chapstick and crap made it worse. Last year I didn't have the problem anymore when I quit using all that stuff completely..but it took months for it to slowly work and somehow I ended up with the problem again. I think it had to do with eating a diet high in EFAS.
I've been on The Master Cleanse for 3 weeks now and they've been at their worst! I should be pretty alkaline now, so go figure...
I'll be doing a Liver Flush in a couple weeks. I'll post my results after that.

I have exactly the same problem, have found ways to improve it, but not yet a definite solution. Apologies for the length of the text which will follow; but I would like to take you through a brief history of how my problem developed, in hope to potentially flag the root cause behind it which might have been overlooked by other participants and myself. I do believe there is a root cause and that it can be solved.
I live in the UK. When I was at university, I had a somewhat bad Acne problem, and took a medicine called Roacutane which is basically a very large dose of vitamin A, which causes your entire body skin to dry severely and eventually get rid of acne. While I was taking it, my lips were always dry and I noticed I would sweet less. After curing the acne, I stopped taking the medicine and was back to normal - including lips, nice and healthy.
Two years later, I graduated, moved in with my girlfriend and started working at an office. I am and was very healthy, eating plenty of vegetables, fruits, high quality extra virgin olive oil and exercising. Little alcohol and absolutely zero drugs and junk food. The only lifestyle changed, which is small, was the fact that I started drinking one cup of coffee a day and perhaps giving my girlfriend oral sex more frequently than before.
Three months later, I was casually working in my office and when I went to the toilet I noticed an unusual "white layer" across my entire lower lip after I washed it - for no apparent reason. Months afterwards I gradually entered into the "peeling cycle" which is roughly the following: Day 1: lips begin drying; Day 2: "skin pockets" on the lower lips start to appear, and when you touch them you realise the outer layer of skin is detached from the inner; Day 3: vertical cracks across lower lips appear and eventually peel off through washing or biting. Day 4: Start all over again, never ending. This situation is very uncomfortable, although barely noticeable for other people. Unless I get inpatient half way through the cycle, and get multi-layers peeling at different phases. This process continued for one whole year.
Then, I spend long holidays in a tropical country during the summer. This included being in a hot weather, swimming in the sea, eating more fruits, less coffee and more food in general. My lips improved significantly, to the point I simply forgot about the peeling. It is important to note though that my perception of the reduced peeling was exaggerated as I was busy with other activities. During this time, I also visited a dermatologist who advised me it was not exfoliative cheilitis, but simply dry lips. I think he did not know what he was talking about. But he prescribed me a custom made moisturising lip balm, based on the fat that birds secrete on their feathers to stop sinking into water (sounds nasty, I know, but it's not as it is only about 2 - 3% of this substance).
I returned to the UK, and my lips carried the "healthy momentum" for a few months, but then gradually started to return to the previous cycling. The bird oil thing lip balm helped dramatically, it is in fact the only substance that manages to hold it off. I now stopped using it because I ran out, and my lips are going out of control again. I tried all sorts of balms but none has worked. I would like to point out that Vaseline (petroleum based) makes it even worst, so do not use it!
Now let's narrow the biggest suspects:
1. Diet: my diet has not really changed much since then, in fact, it has improved, so I would rule it out of the equation.
2. Coffee: rather unlikely too as first I take little and second many people take it without side-effects (plus I just love coffee).
3. Oral sex: would make sense from a bacterial point of view, but I have spent one year without doing it and experienced no changes. So I do not think that is the case either.
4. Stress: definitely not, I'm zen.
5. Roacutane medicine (vitamin A overdose): this could be the trigger, but interestingly enough, the problem only began two years after I stopped taking it as opposed to have dragged on right away. So perhaps not.
I will try the Liver Cleansing and will post my results. I have never tried it before so it will be a good base for assessment.
Please let me know if you have any ideas of what could be the trigger for this condition. And ideally, the cure.

This is a reply to # 2,109,248Roacutane medicine is known to cause people to become hypersensitive with allergies. It could be that you developed allergies after the medication, possibly lots of food sensitivities or allergies. Not sure.

This is a reply to # 2,109,299Yes, I have come across several stories of people developing EC after going through the Roaccutane treatment. However for me, the EC did not simply continue after the drug intake, but started out of nowhere nearly two years after. So one could say that it might have made me more prone to it, but perhaps it is not the only cause.
Perhaps I am simply naturally or due to the Roaccutane, prone to this problem. Then under the right conditions, it develops easily. This makes me believe that I might have acquired candida through oral sex with my gf, in one particular occasion when she might have had a larger flora than usual, and this triggered the condition. I have not been diagnosed with candida overgrowth (yet), however I remember often seeing my lips with a thin sort of white slime, which looks like this type of colony.
I do not believe any cream or remedy will solve the root cause of this problem, but rather only cover up the effects. So I will try a machine gun approach on nutrition and cleansing.
From next weekend (05/09/13) I will do a:
1. Classic Liver flush
2. Go through an intensive vitamin intake (mostly B and E)
3. Verify if I have candida, and if yes, will attack it naturally and with nutrition
4. Will keep using the 1% PCA NA moisturising lip balm (which works brilliantly well btw; it does not cure the root cause, but makes my lips 80% normal)to keep my lips hanging while they heal
I will make a log of peeling cycles and will take regular pictures, so that if it works (and I am optimistic it will) I can confidently share the cure. The entire process will probably take a few months, and with winter coming to the UK it won't help, but we'll get there.
NB. I have had EC for two years now.

My lips peel and most chapstick or lip gloss make them peel worse or dont do anything.

This is a reply to # 2,109,248if you take accutane, roaccutane, isotretinoin, you atrohpied your sebum glands in all of your body in some degree, there are some cases were sebum and Acne come back, but if no you need superdosess of testosterone like in the gyms to get your skin and lips cured, and to make your glands grow back to normal. here is the blog that explain it all

This is a reply to # 2,109,248Possibly a combination of things such as the Rocutaine (devastating drug, I took Accutaine and blame that on my gluten intolerance) plus a lack of vitamin D from the sun.
Vitamin D works in concert with many things and when our D levels drop in the winter, lots of things can go out of whack.
You might look into calendula salve for your lips. I had angular chelitis briefly until I began to put that on the corners of my mouth and it went away in a couple of days and hasn't returned.
Also, I have no idea if it would help, but Dr. Christopher's bone and tissue massage oil has been a miracle for many things.
I also love Traumeel which is arnica cream. Don't know if I'd put it on my lips though.
Hope some of these help, but really, first thing is to optimize your D levels either by taking D3 in large doses, buying a vitamin D lamp, or sitting in the sun at the right time of year and day. I'm not sure what that is for England. For Canada, it's May - Sept from 10am - 2pm.

This is a reply to # 376,183Mine went away for quite a while after working outside and also having to take large doses of L-lysine to stop having fever blisters from working outside. I'm not sure if it was the lysine or vitamin D from sun or combined, it went away but is back now. I left the seasonal job at the end of last year. This is a reply to # 376,183As a brass player this problem is very annoying to me for any sound that i produce are being produced by the vibrations of my lips. When all my skins have peeled, too much air and vibrations go into the instrument what leaves leaks in the corners of my mouth. A thick skin has more stability that leaves no leaking air, but for the mouthpiece to cooperate properly i have too push it too hard against my lips. Somewhat in the middle of the peeling process my lips feel perfectly fine and i can play at my best. I don't use any balms or chap sticks because they only seem to weaken the skin on my lips even faster and eventually when playing (or sometimes even before that) they start peeling of.
To be honest i often have midnight snacks which are not particularly healthy and could definitely worsen my lips due to digestion problems. Besides that i eat after 7 pm i cannot believe that this causes the problem. I can find myself with lack of vitamin D and/or E and that i smoked weed for 2 years as an explanation.
I started out running for an average 6 km a day which leaves me with an extreme energy boost. But still no change with my lips. I am clean for 5 months now and had hoped there would be some positive outcomes.
Via google i found this forum and i was very intrigued by all the answers and questions that stand here. The only question remaining is how to perform a Liver Flush or cleansing??? I olso have migraine (when usually happens when i have too much gal in my liver) could this be my problem? I figured that if gal is stored in the liver maybe this could help me out with returning my lips to their former glory :).
Srry for the bad English i tried my best. Good luck to all of you and hopefully i get a reply on how to perform a liver flush.

I've always had a problem with somewhat dry lips, but never peeling or severely chapped lips that I would have to peel an entire layer off daily or every other day. Like many, this condition only effects my bottom lip. It started happening approximately a year ago and had HAUNTED me since. It lead to paranoia about the physical appearance of my lip at any given time, and was just overall painful. Peeling of the dead skin would sometimes rip fresh skin underneath leaving it raw and bleeding. Everything I could find online would chalk it up to chelitis, dehydration, lip balms, liver cleansing, etcetera. I knew none of these should be the source for me because I'd never had the problem before, and my lifestyle is much healthier than any other time in my life. I wanted to get a biopsy, buy had no health insurance.
Solution (for me):
I guessed that the problem must be fungal or bacterial.
Possible sources
-Oral sex (Vagina)
-Electric Toothbrush
My hypothesis is my bottom lip was infected by my electric toothbrush head. Approximately a year ago (slightly before the problem started) I bought my first electric toothbrush. Instead of removing the head of the toothbrush from the body after brushing, I would just rinse it and put it on the stand. I later realized this was trapping water and overtime causing bacteria to grow unseen inside the brush head.
Possible solution:
-Bleach bath for lip
-Anti-fungal Cream
I've been on this regimen for about 10 days and I'm already seeing AMAZING results. Some doctors prescribe "bleach baths" to patients with skin infections, so I figure it wouldn't hurt to replicate to scale for my lip. I put a few drops of bleach in a small glass (large shot glass) then fill it 3/4 full with water. Stir it up, then submerge my bottom lip in the solution for 2 minutes once a day for 5 days. Rinse thoroughly, then apply a thin layer of an anti-fungal cream; rub it in and let dry. After the cream drys, apply Carmax lightly on top of. Apply the anti-fungal cream 2-3 times a day.
What anti-fungal cream?
-Clotrimazole Cream (the same cream used to treat Jock Itch, Ringworm, and Athletes Foot)
My results:
Amazing, and I'm only a week in. My lip is not drying and crusting much anymore. My bottom lip still needs VERY LIGHT exfoliation about once every third or so day, but the skin comes off easily and does cause any tearing or irritation. My lip is left with a smooth continuous healthy looking layer.
As I said, I'm only a week in, but these are the best results I've received with trying everything I could read under the sun(except the liver cleanse). I really hope this helps someone, because this issue was really starting to depress me, and I just didn't know what to do. Please let me know if this works for you. Once again, I wouldn't recommend the "bleach bath" for longer that a week. If you don't want to do the bleach, you may try just the antifungal cream, or antifungal and substitute the bleach batch for Tea Tree oil cut with coconut or another healthy oil of your choice.

Did you find that your hypothesis above was correct? I’ve had this problem a long time and have just been putting up with it and applying lypsil or other lip balms twice per day to cover the problem such that it exfoliates after I’ve brushed my teeth.
Fungal infection sounds possible, and perhaps electric toothbrush could have been the cause... Anyway, did you cure yourself through your treatment method.
