Re: 1919
While I have no direct experience (at least, none that I'm aware of) in taking/using Quinine (not to be confused with Quinone), J.R. Christopher stated plainly "take a little too much Quinine and you will go deaf....take a lot too much Quinine and you will die". J.R. explained that there is not a lot of difference in quantity between "a little too much and a lot too much". This is sort of born out by the fact that in the initial post to this thread, the rundown on the use of quinine is given in the ammounts of "from 1 to 6 grains"... and as best I know, a grain is not very much quantity, and neither is 6 of them. To me, that's profound, a little too much - you go deaf, a little bit more too much - you go death.
Meanwhile, there are anecdotes, some in part based on lore I suppose, of Native Americans who were banished from their tribes because they had gotten "death fever" that the Chiefs feered would spread to the whole tribe, so they were sent away to die alone (I hear echoes of Trapper, and Hemingway, and the chicken that crossed the road ;) In their lonely suffering & wandering, they crawled into a pool/pond in hopes of relieving their fever...and this pond just happened to have a big old tree bent/broken over and fallen into it (natural peruvian bark tea - cold infusion - probably does not come any more natural nor any better than this). They drank and drank to slake their fever thirst....and wouldn't you know it, the fever "went away"... and they went back to their tribe, and with much surprise was greeted & welcomed back.
