From a 1910 Medical book: bicarb to prevent "iodism"

From A Practical Treatise on Materia Medica by John Shoemaker, MD, page 567

He is discussing strong reactions to Iodine and passes along this suggestion:

"According to Rohmann and Malachowski, from 8 to 12 Gm. of sodium bicarbonate, given in two doses, within 24 hours, will cause the symptoms of chronic Iodine poisoning to disappear."

I wonder if this was an early version of the salt loading protocol??? I wonder if bicarb works better than salt??

Any volunteers??
