Re: Duh....
I somehow got out of taking HS chemistry...
When the Alt Med Dr first mentioned checking the liver detox pathways--I had no idea what he was talking about. He sent me home with a test kit. In the test kit, at bedtime you take 2 aspirin and 2 tylenol...and pee in a jug if you have to get up in the night, and first thing in the am.
The 2nd part of the test was taking a Nodoz in the am (for the caffeine) and 2 hours later, taking a saliva sample- and again later in the afternoon.
I'm just now understanding how the liver is supposed to detox too. There are different pathways in the liver that detox different chemicals/toxins, and that require specific things to work properly. If any one of those pathways are deficient, the liver won't detox like it should (or as Newport says, your methylation process is broken).
From the caffeine, what I'm sure it's going to show, is that the 1st pathway is working quickly to detox the caffeine---it liquifies the toxins and the 2nd pathway is supposed to add whatever is needed for the toxins to then be eliminated from the liver to the kidneys or bowels...if the 2nd pathway is not working, if the elements needed aren't present...you can guess what happens to the toxins the first pathway liquified in doing it's job. Doesn't get eliminated.
What got me started finding this out, was in trying to understand why the chemicals that are supposed to be the good chemicals in fruits and vegetables--and which are in other things as well..were backing up as toxins in my liver....and toxins that are not eliminated can be stored for years in the fatty tissue/organs- including the brain.
Aspirin--is a salicylate...same as is in fruits and vegetables. From seeing how my liver processed the aspirin...we'll know if that pathway is working correctly or not. It most likely is not.
That's an elementary explanation, and there is more to try to understand, but if you look even here across CZ with a search for "glutathione" there's plenty of information and articles posted.
Specific amino acids, vitamins and minerals are needed for the different pathways to function as they should. Building up the glutathione production with the required elements (cystine (N-acetyl-L CYSTINE), glycine (Trimethylglycine TMG), choline, inositol...methionine, specific B vitamins-especially B6- B12 & including B5 for Calcium pantothenate), Vitamin C, E, Folic Acid, selenium, magnesium, zinc, moly..and L-Taurine, L-Glutamine for the sulphurs...are the main things.
The following link is long, but a very good explanation I found of the different detox pathways. Save it and read and reread it. And just put in an internet search for "glutathione production" and you'll find alot of information. There's also information on what happens with "depleted gluathione" if you search that too.
You can read what increases/decreases each pathway specifically, good things and bad things:

The "methylation" diagram also shows the process of breaking down the toxins to eliminate them.
